NS: that's why the period is 11pi/6... because the hour hand is moving... they rejoin one another on the hour each 12 o'clock... but during the first hour - they never cross paths... The hands actually meet every 1 hour 5 minutes and roughly 27 seconds... and when that happens the distance is 4 mm... at that time - and at the time when they are directly opposed (like 6 o'clock) the slope is actually zero for that brief instant... they are neither getting closer nor further apart...
I monkeyed around with different lengths of the hands - if the ratio is the same, all that changes is the amplitude of the function, but the image stays the same... when the ratio of the hand sizes changes, then the curve starts to change... It's actually a fairly nice bell curve... (graphing the distance of hands over time)...
