Dateline: Monday June 11, 2001
I normally only have one day a week to play Magic at the local shop but due to some family matters I missed my play date last week, so I got two this week (BTW, if you're married, you know what I'm going through
).
So I chose to go on Monday to play in addition to my normal Thursday play date. Well, I've been working on this pathetic version of "Con-Troll" lately and was eager to try it out on the boys at the shop. I walk in and BAM! this dude, who is an excellent player, asks me to play test against him with his new Opposition deck.
I pull out Con-Troll, shuffle, and away we go. Game 1, he gets mana screwed, I win because of it. Game 2, his deck is just too slow, I win because it. He takes a few min. to re-adjust his deck, I should be playing Fires/Blue Skies or Rebels to test against him but I didn't bring those proxy decks with me.
Another Game, with the same decks but his is a bit faster than before. Game 1, I win, I couldn't find an excuse why his deck lost and I chalk it up to his shuffling technique. Next game, I win and I am beginning to think something is really wrong here. He curses and puts it away and asks if I want to play with extended decks. I say, "okay".
He pulls out a Rebel extended deck (Im not so sure why it was extended though). I am with Counter-Phoenix except all basic lands, well, just 1 Thawing Glaciers. Games 1 - 4, I win.
This dude I'm playing against is NOT a scrub! He wins alot of local tournies, I do not. Well, more people came in and I maybe won about 5 or 6 more matches against other people of various levels.
None of this is getting into my head until I came home and my wife asks me how I did at the shop tonight (she thinks there's tournament everytime I go). I told her there was no tournament and I just had fun, and as I was saying that, I was reflecting about the night. I don't think I lost a single game and THAT, my friends, is a Blue Moon ocassion.
