Something to think about....

Hey have any of you guys been shopping at the local Wal-Mart, Kmart etc. when you spy a oddball box, say Stronghold, Mirage? Last year in my travels I stumbled across a sealed box of Unglued at some unknowing music store. In fact they were also selling packs of Urza's Saga, Destiny, Tempest and Mirage for their sticker price. Needless to say I grabbed it all. This makes me wonder..just how many stores either:

A: Have old stuff just (Legends, Arabian Nights etc.) lying in their stock room recesses.

B: Or is selling stuff right now but since they're like a crafts store, no one suspects they might actually be a gold mine for quality oldies.

This line of thinking fuels my suspicions of why the occasional Box of Legends, Arabian Nights, and Beta popping up on Ebay.

Got any stories?

In a mom and pop second hand store in Searcy Arkansas I found a beta box...

It only had 3 packs in it though... They were 2.50 a pack... I didn't pull anything good... and that was years ago...

Needless to say - i check for cards everywhere now...;) :D

For some reason Target packages individual boosters (I guess for inventory) but I've never seen them sell a box.

Probably around '98 or 99 I saw a baseball card shop in NJ selling Ice Age packs and I guess a couple of boxes. I didn't have enough money to buy them though.

If you ever find a sealed box in a store that doesn't look like it knows or cares, try getting them to scan the price at the bottom of the box.

It rings up the same as one card pack. A friend of mine got a box of Homelands like that in a craft shop that had gotten into the "Pog" craze and the Magic craze, but was selling them out.

Oddly enough, I had shopped for Pog there a year and a half before...

D'OH.

Orgg... tried that at Wal-mart... it doesn't work there...

I'm assuming the UPC codes on the bottom of the box, and packs used to be the same, but aren't anymore...:( ;)

I found a box or two of Alpha, Beta, and some Ice Age boosters at a junk shop in Oregon. I had the guy down to 1.00 per booster until my nephew came in and blabbed how much they were worth. and up went the price from 1.00 to 32.00 a piece :(

My nefew might be a month older than me, but he's a dumboink all the time. Age does not bring wisdom

Saying I would have been upset is a serious understatement. That sucks dude...however even at 32 dollars a pack it's still a good deal.

Back in the day, this store in Alabama bought WAAAAAAAAYYY too much Fallen Empires.

A friend of mine became the store manager, and sold me several boxes of FE for $20 each to "help him clear out the store room".

Being FE, it wasn't woth much, but I had tons of pump-knights and Hymns to trade for years afterward.

I think WoTC is sorta playing follow the leader with those individually packaged packs. Both Poke'mon and Yu-Gioeora whatever.. do this..which are both more popular with younger players. Following that train of though...

Well I've seen individually packed boosters of Weatherlight, so it's much older than those games... Probably it is just for inventory.

also try towns where magic isn't popular (anymore, never was, etc.) you wouldn't believe the kinds of magic crap you can find at the occasional roadside junk shop along I-101
