The spoilers been out a couple days, what do you guys think? Any particular cards that you'd like to point out?

Personally, I think Nantuko Cultivator is really, really fickin' cool.

My big happy thing: There is exactly ONE rare that's worthy of vomit. Cephalid Vandal (Goblin Spy, 'cept he costs more and his ability is worse). Everything else you open, you might get to play seriously with! Yahoo!

Hiya, I'm Hetemti's polar opposite. I like Torment a lot. The commons are fairly strong, the new mechanics are at the very least very intriguing, and the rares, as I said, are excellent. The new multi-lands are really cool (though the new black land is god-awful), etc... VERY impressive set, IMHO.

Strengths: Good/bad rare ratio, good mechanics
Weaknesses: Terrible pixelization on white non-foils, a worse rare Goblin Spy, screwy draft mechanics that result in one player getting 5+ Crippling Fatigues (I kid you not, I headed six drafts at the prerelease)

I like it.

I think it`s tournament impact remains to be seen. Ive not seen any Torment-based decks that beat the existing archetypes yet, and so it could be that the whole Black vs Black Hosers theme of the set might be ignored, at least initially.

But if people jump on the bandwagon, other people will start using the anti-Black cards in Torment, and Torment will become a very well-played set.

Torment is very reminiscent to me of Weatherlight.

But the Dreams are almost all block-busting, Mutilate makes 'Tog decks silly if they can afford to play a few more swamps, and there are endless cards waiting to be manipulated by the thinking designer.

Its a very nice set indeed.

Ok, I don't get it.

What makes Torment so good?

Can someone tell me 5 cards that will have a great impact on
Type II and the Extended format?

I'm confused,........

Being a horrible deck designer, I miss a lot of things.

I'm not trying to be a smart ???, I just don't see it.

All these cards are definately constructed-worthy, and there are several more that are very viable which I left off this list, like Barbarian Outcast and Nantuko Blightcutter, which might well get played.

Circular Logic
Mutilate
Nantuko Shade
Turbulent Dream
Devastating Dreams
Vengeful Dreams
Obsessive Search
Chainers Edict
Dawn of The Dead
Faceless Butcher
Ichorid
Crackling Club
Fiery Temper
Grim Lavamancer
Overmaster
Pardic Arsonist
Basking Rootwalla
Nostalgic Dreams
Parallel Evolution (reactive 187 effects dont forget)
Cabal Coffers
Tainted Peak
Tainted Wood
Tainted Isle
Tainted Field

I promise that very soon indeed you`ll be truly fed up of playing against Circular Logic, and not long after that Extended will be here again and then you`ll REALLY be fed up of playing against it.

So I'm NOT the only one who thinks Cracklin' club ain't a horrible card.

I'm refreshed... after getting dismissed by Andy Wolf, David Leader and Brain Kibler on "this card ain't bad" after they chuckled when I put it on a creature.... well, I was having a few doubts about my thoughts on it...

In case you didn't know, these guys are HIGH ranking guys in my area... I was playing Andy Wolf... if my bugger'd deck had let me see another swamp I might have had a chance....

Crackling Club is KINDA like a Mogg Fanatic - a permanent that adds one to your damage dealt per turn and can be sacrificed to Ping something.

Its obviously weaker, as a creature enchantment, and is probably borderline playable but it IS available for consideration.

I have new-found respect for Crackling Club after some guy with 3 of them kicked my butt hard at the prerelease.

As for Torment in general, I like most of the cards, most of them are playable . My favorites are:

Basking Rootwalla
Aquameoba
Skywing Aven
Circular Logic
Acorn Harvest
Violent Eruption
Fiery Temper

I think this set is going to be a good one. I bet a lot of new decks are going to spring from this set.

Cards I like a great deal:

BLACK:

Carrion Rats
Let's see, 2/1s for 1. Savannah Lions (gone), Mtenda Lions
(easily nullified), Jackal Pup (hurts you). And this one can help empty out your oponent's graveyard!

Carrion Wurm
6/5 for 5? With a drawback that isn't? Green should have it so good!
Dawn of the Dead
Combo me!
Faceless Butcher
You lose a creature, I gain a creature, 2/3 gives him a nice fat body, and he can be used with your OWN 187 creatures to repeat!
Insidious Dreams
It's the first multi-card tutor, unless you count Mangara's Tome...insta-combo!
Laquatus' Champion
Let's see. Six mana, six power. That's good. Regeneration. That's better. Hits for 6 when he comes in. That's amazing! I've won games just by having him resolve.
Mutilate
This should be self-explanatory. Black should always have had Wrath...and now it does.
Nantuko Shade
I reiterate: when power is greater than or equal to casting cost, that's good. Add that to pumping, and it's amazing! One of the best creatures in Type II.
Shade's Form
Let me get this straight. I can play it on my own creature for recursiveness and the ability to pump...or play it on my opponent's creature and kill, then steal it? The split card that wasn't!

BLUE:

Balshan Collaborator
Flying pumpers have always ruled the skies, when reasonably priced...and at 4 mana, this flier is quite reasonable.
Circular Logic
When played late-game, this is identical to Counterspell! Can you pay 10 extra mana for that?
Ghostly Wings
I grant evasion to my creature. AND make it bigger. AND give it the ability to bounce. Or, in a pinch, it's a two-mana sorcery Unsummon on one of YOUR creatures. Not bad at all!
Possessed Aven
3/3 flier for 4 that grows. Enough said.

GREEN:

Basking Rootwalla
The Rootwalla cycle was always pretty good, and the idea of being able to throw this guy to a Verdict and pump it next turn is just too good to pass up.
Narcissism
Let me get this straight. For a fairly modest investment, every card in my hand turns into a miniature Giant Growth? And the card itself is one as well?

RED:

Grim Lavamancer
R for a 1/1 that shoots for 2 on demand whenever you have the cards in your graveyard? This guy completes any burn deck!
Devastating Dreams
Wildfire, made-to-order? And at a severely lower casting cost? How could you NOT love this card?
Longhorn Firebeast
Let's see. Power equal to casting cost. And my opponent can make it go away, but only if he pays 5 life...which, in a quick deck, he can't afford to pay. I'm all for it!
Fiery Temper
Sonic Seizure
Violent Eruption

Instant speed burn, I've missed you so...*sniff* Even at 3 mana, or the cost of an unwanted card, or at heavy red...these are too good to pass up.

WHITE:

Militant Monk
What you have to realize is that you're not paying for a 2/1. As an attacker that doesn't block, and also taps to prevent damage, you're paying 1WW for a 2/3. Or two points of self-preservation a turn. Me likey!

LAND:

All of them!
Cabal Coffers can be a huge mana boost with enough time to wait. The Tainted Lands are easy to get working in a deck with halfway decent mana production.

------------------------------------------------

All in all, I like this set. Madness has the potential to be a little crazy with the right cards...
