Selecting 8th Edition: 7-12-02 Lineup

Actually, SeFRo, the ring gets played in mono-black (got played in, the deck seems dead now) Control, pretty much because the deck runs Cabal Coffers, and CoP: Black is "some good" vs 4x corrupts, 3x Soul Burns as the only way to kill someone.
Also I managed to kill Rice Snack with it in my horrible mono-black ensnaring bridge deck. (PLEASE, don't ask.)

Well, the notion of a ring dealing a blast of damage isn't exactly in line with the story, I guess...

But it sure is helluva fun using a few extra lands late-game and yelling(no matter WHERE you are) "Listen up, you primitive screwheads! THIS is my BOOMSTICK"

Or, if you're playing it more defensively, saying "Come Get Some" while making gun-cocking motions.

Granted, it's mostly seen in Blue decks when they've got twelve mana on the board, and are confident behind their walls, but sometimes that green guy has tons of land out his fith turn... because he's searche'd 'em out of his deck.

Sefro, you of all people I would have thought would have seen Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn and Evil Dead 3: The Army of Darkness, and know the "Boomstick" reference.

Try the shotgun out, really! As long as the Chaos/Team/Giant game goes a little while, it'll dominate the board pretty well. Even if it does take a while to set up(and sucks if you get it in your open hand):D

Serra Angel?

Come Get Some!
Why is the Shotgun in every relese? It's a fan favourite, and a Timmy card all at once.

Yeah man, I got the boomstick reference. Why ya think I called it a shotgun? ;)

Or did Ash have a different weapon? I always thought it was an S-Mart shotgun.

But...er...the ring seems rather too much. I've never liked it and I never knew anybody in real life who liked it. Sure, plenty of people tried to use it, but when you set up a mana generator or a defensive line to supplement it, you quickly discover its all a waste and that booster or protection engine you have would be better suited to a more wicked vehicle, and not that clunky ring.

It is a Timmy card...but I've never once known a Timmy in real life who liked it. Maybe its a "Forgiving Timmy" card, only for Timmys who are real forgiving to garbage in their packs.

Sure, there are worse cards out there *cough* VIZZERDRIX *cough* TRAINED ORGG *cough* RICHARD GARFIELD'S MOM *cough* ... but the fact that the ring has made it through so many editions, from Revised to 8th, is just boggling. Five editions without somebody saying "Uh guys, you know this card actually sucks more than a porn star?"

I know, y'all who like it will say its a good card and everything...but damn, even for casual it is just a pile of junk.

As for that Type II use of it...I find that real sad a white opponentn never had anything to deal with it. Artifact damage versus white is just silly, because a smart white opponent will pack disenchants and the like...

I voted for the old art for Spined Wurm.

My flavor text for Aladdin's Ring:

"Mages are known for their vanity and their power; this device embodies both."

Well, I guess for me it comes down again to what I like vs what is probably best for the set overall. And Birds/Vine definitely fit my ideas for decks better than Elves/Tree.

And the Ring is probably just one of those things you need to use with Mana Flare, although I don't think the latter is in Standard anymore, right?

Hmm, I think because of my bashing the ring so much, I bet when I start up on MTGO that I will be forced to use it out of nothing more than sheer ironic fate.

Watch out for the only deck my tiny collection will allow me: "The Dreaded 'Aladin's Ring + Mirari's Wake' Shotgun Deck"! :D

Well I voted for Elves and tree. I think those are better flavor green cards. I do wish they went back to the original art for the Elves or get new art that reflects the original.

I voted for the Elves/Tree right away. I can't even imagine green without the Elves. (I'm also praying we get the Apocalypse painlands, which would make up for the loss of the birds).

I voted for the elf just for the fact that it wouldn't feel right not to have it in the standard environment. BOP is L.E. w/upgrade but then I wouldn't go with what I want.

Side note:

Rob baby where you been. haven't seen you in a long time.

Ya already got front page link status, man. ;)

Very funny comic! Sloppy, but what the hell, its funny! And that's good enough!

I've been thinking of making a MTG comic. This may just be the inspiration I need. :D

Thanks for the kind words! It's nice to get feedback. I'm not sure what to do about the sloppiness, since I'm afraid much of it stems from my less-than-stellar artistic talent. I guess printing up some nice rectangular frames would be a start, followed by getting some actual art-supply-store pens and pencils and such. I'm glad it can be enjoyed anyway. Any real artists around here with some tips for me?

SeFRo: Go for it. I have a longstanding love of comic strips (and secret desire to write and draw them), and I love seeing gamer-oriented ones. You tell good stories with good timing, and I'm sure you could translate that well.

Caution: Rant ahead..

You know what bothers me? .......

They give each color a Lord then threaten to take away a great
one drop. What? They need to quite chosing the wrong cards
for use to vote on.

If they really want to include us in developing 8th Edition they
should post a list of all the Common and Uncommon cards,
from each color, they are willing to include in the set and let
the Magic community vote on that. Ofcourse that would be a
mess but they could choose 25-30(5-6 each color) of the top vote
getters and include them in 8th Edition. They could also do this
for what we'd like to remove. I know,... I live in a make believe
world and I don't understand the complexities of set design
but they make chioces all the time and I wonder about their
understanding sometimes.

End of rant..

I think a variety of options would have been nice...

Say, rather than splitting up the dynamic duo, they could have let us decide if we wanted to.

They could've done this:

CHOOSE A RARE: Mana Birds or Utopia Tree

CHOOSE A COMMON: Llanowar Elves or Vine Trellis or Wild Growth or Quirion Elves.

Not like letting us choose a bit more would be harmful. It'd be neat to see if the playing community really wanted a split like that, instead of just forcing it on us all.

BTW, my submission for Aladdin's ring:

"Some say Aladdin forgot to wish for a Cursed Scroll."

If they had done that, Llanowar Elves and Birds would have won by a long shot. (Not to say that they should have won...)
I seriously doubt a majority of the gaming community would want a split like that.

So I can understand why Wizards made that poll they way they did... I still find it mildly annoying though.

Their whole attitude throughout this exercise has been something like "We're getting bored of basic set design, so let's get the players to do it and blame them if things go wrong."

Sigh.

As expected, the birds won. No wonder. They're the better mana producer, and they're rare. No one wants to have rares they can't use.

Oh, well.
