Depends if "most people" are either rich or want to be rich (and what is "rich" anyway?) Maybe most people are happy where they are or their money aspirations don't qualify them to want to be "rich" :p

Just because they don't want it to a degree at which it becomes dangerous or obnoxious or whatever doesn't mean they don't want it...

This is something I've wanted to comment on in my blog, something to the note of "crap floats to the top."

Basically, in an even environment, where you have people who act fair and kind, and people who will backstab and cheat, eventually, the cheating backstabbers will win. Once a backstabber wins, things get even harder for the honest folks. The cycle continues so that more backstabbers win.

You end up with a system where only the most maniacal monsters are able to claw and bite their way to the top, while the honest folks are either happy with where they are and get crushed by the abusive jerks at the top, or get stomped on constantly as they climb ever-so-slowly.

You have a system where only crap floats to the top. This is, essentially, our civilization. Good people can be on the top, but it is very rare. For the most part, cruelty, abuse, dirty pool, nepotism, and the like are the ways people get to the very top of things.

So, yes, those in power suck, for the most part. As for "those who want to be rich" it should be noted rather as "those who are just like those at the top, except not yet at the top" also suck. ;)

Wanting to be rich has nothing really to do with it. Ask somebody "would you like a million bucks?" and everyone would honestly answer positively. Ask them if they'd be willing to backstab and be evil for it, and most people sit comfortably in their places as grunts.

It is nice being one of the good guys, even if we are little mice waiting for the evil tyrant to fall.

That's not what I was asking/saying. First, what is "rich"? Having a million dollars? Not having to work for the rest of your life? Having an income of x dollars for the rest of your life?

And some people are truly happy where they are, believe it or not. Obviously they would welcome a windfall but they might even donate it all to some cause, depending on their outlook on life.

Oh, I agree with you there. But still, most people would go to certain lengths to become "rich." However, those lengths are not enough to actually make them rich (except when they are). Certainly there are also those who don't care about money at all, or who would rather donate it all to charity or something if they did have a lot of it...

I think that's an interesting question. How much is rich? It seems like rich people don't think they are rich enough. And most poor people seem to act like they have everything they need.

I don't think "most" people will go to any lengths to get rich - "most" means about 80-90% (to me). I think a good number are willing to try (juct check application numbers for reality shows, for example), but that's probably only 20-30% of available population.
