School Musicals

Alright, it's that time of the year , again, when the school musical keeps me from playing tourney magic <fooey>!
We're doing "Anything Goes" and, of course, I'm directing the pit orchestra <double fooey!>
It'll be a good show though and somewhat worth my time because not only does it help my young musicians get better at playing their instruments thus improving the Instrumental program, but I net over a grand ($,$$$) to do it! (Can you say BOOOOSSSSTERRRRRR BOOOOOOX?)
What musical is your school doing?
Or have done, for you "Old Farts" like me ;)!

As part of my theatre major, I have to direct something. I'm doing some David Ives comedies. I'm also in one of my classmates' projects. She's doing The Love Talker and I get to play this demon thing that comes out of the swamp only to have sex with these two backwoods sisters.

I love art.

We're doing Oliver.. tonight's opening night. I'm not part of it.. I tried out for the pit orchestra, but they decided to only take one out of the three flutists that tried out (it was one senior and two freshmen, and of course they took the senior).. My friend (the other freshman flutist that didn't make it) is in the chorus.. my band director is in charge of the production, and he rants to us for the first 20 minutes of class every day because the play sucks.. Our Oliver can't sing and doesn't know his lines.. not good. And one of our chorus people who actually had a couple lines broke her jaw while doing hurdles for track.. also not good.

Haven't actually been in any, but seen plenty my sister's been in: Pirates of Penzance, Anything Goes, West Side Story... and as mentioned sometime in the past (I think it's in Classic now), I've seen my only Broadway musical of Crazy For You...

What's so "double fooey!" about directing the pit orchestra?

I played in the Pit (violin) for seven brides for seven brothers, bye bye birdy, hello dolly, and my favorite the pirates of penzance.

Is it just me or does trying to read the pathetically scrawled hand written scroll really a pain in the butt?

Well my old HS just did the King and I, which was pretty good I guess, sound was real bad ('O', I hope you never had problems like that with the sound), and it was weird not being up there...

But musicals I've done are Oliver (I was supposed to sing 'Oom Pah Pah' but the teacher decided to nix that), Cinderella (Queen), Damn Yankees (Sister), Godspell (I didn't really have name there, but I was the character who sang 'Turn Back o' Man'), Lil' Shop of Horrors (Ronnette, one of the trio gals), Sound of Music (Sister Berthe, the mean nun who wants to get rid of Maria in the beginning), our show choir performed Once on this Island (Asaka, Mother Earth character), and a ladie asked me a few weeks ago if I would do Chess for the community theatre group, because they need a "strong alto", oh, how that warmed my heart :D...So I'm definately going to be doing that next year...

Although, I haven't really seen any professional musicals, I really should, because its something I love...And if I didn't have a head on my shoulders I probably would be chasing my dream of being on Broadway...

What a wonderful question YJ!...

I love being in plays, escpecially musicals. Although I am not participating in any drama production (or school) right now, I'm just waiting for my next "gig" to come up. Here is my high school repetoire.

Music Man, 5th grade, had 7 parts.
Wizard of Oz, 6th grade, had 4 parts.
Moved to El Paso from Scottsdale
Gondoliers, 9th grade, Giorgio(small part)
Star Brick: An enterprise spoof, 9th grade, Scotty
The Sorceror, 10th grade, Page(small part)
Jungle Book, 10th grade, Baloo
Cheaper by the Dozen(the musical version), 11th grade, Mr. Gilbreath(male lead)
Moved to Atlanta from El Paso
Man who came to Dinner, 12th Grade, John the Butler
Brighton beach memoirs(a short for dessert theatre), 12th grade, I forget my character name.
Gypsy(musical), 12th Grade, Pop(small part)
Scene from "One, Two Three", 12th Grade, Mr. Macnamara(Male Lead, won best actor in a mini-scene for this)

I haven't done any drama activities since last year, but I am always looking.

As far as professional musicals go, the only one I've ever seen was Cabaret at Studio 54 in NYC. That was friggin' amazing even if a simple gin and tonic did cost me 11 damn dollars.

But the sheer amount of groping and gyrating in that show made it worth the price of drinks ... :)

I've been to many, but only been in one, some baseball musical. As you can tell, it wasn't very memorable (and no, it wasn't Damn Yankees). I was in the chorus, and the only song I remember is one about killing the umpire... and the only reason I remember that is because the evil principal was the umpire, and I got to sing it to her...

In my freshman year the school did "The Apple Tree" i belive it was called.
I was in the pit and played saxophone.
One of the best experiences with music i have ever had, but i dont think the school is planning to do another musical with the band :(
