Sad day in a geek community

After waiting for a really long time, we finally got Dungeons and Dragons - the movie. My expectations were great for this one. But after seeing it, I can't help but feel ROBBED. The makers of this movie screwed up EVERYTHING that could possibly be screwed up!!!

The screenplay is terrible. Out of all the best-selling D&D novels, they couldn't choose one, say, some of Salvatore's stuff or Dragonlance, they had to choose this retarted script for 10 year olds!

The actors either didn't know how to, or forgot how to (as is the case with Jeremy Irons and Thora Birch) act.

Marlon Wayans is a complete retard, and absolutely ruins the movie. Comic relief? Kiss my behind!

The dwarf is a crybaby. WTH????

The huge bad guy in armor is wearing blue lipstick. WTH?!???!

The wise old elven healer looks like an effing redneck.

And these are only some of the things that ruin this movie, not only for hardcore D&D players like me, but for everybody. The only cool things about this movie are special effects - sword fights look REALLY good, and dragons are awesome. But everything else... *sigh*

And of course, all the critics are going to (rightfully) bash the movie. And along with that, the public will get the impression that D&D - the game is just as stupid, pointless, and bland as the movie.

I haven't seen it, but I've heard similar comments from anyone that has. I saw an interview with Wayans about the movie maybe a week ago. He started talking about the actual game and said it was terrible and boring, and compared it to "Playing with yourself". And yes, he did mean it the way you think he did. He made some other nasty comments, too.

I could tell that movie was going to suck just by looking at the preview...

That's why I didn't go see it.

i saw it yesterday with my mom and bro. i knew it was going to suck but i went for my bro. i am a hardcore d&d player. 7-8 years. the movie was the gayest thing ever. sort of like Phantom menace. no story line, good graphics, and bad acting. HMMM....must be an fu****' conspiracy. i hate these new directors and writers who think that bringing a game/book or something like that, that it's going to be good. they dont even get stuff right. there's lots of stuff that they forget. it's annoying and it pisses fans like me off. lately i dont even want to see movies that are related to things that i do. it pisses me off. i really hope that they DO NOT make a magic movie. they'll just fu** it up. they always do. Lucas didn't even follow any of the novels that were written for before "A NEW HOPE" so now he fu**** up. it sux

Of course it sucked, what do you expect for a D&D movie to be when its written by a guy who played D&D once 15 years ago, didn't have anything close to a decent setting other then being a heavily generic fantasy world, which is something that D&D has often inspired not to be with places like Krynn, Ravenloft, the Realms, and even Planescape or Spelljammer.
This is just a special effects bonanza, the actors were baddly choosen for their roles IMHO. I mean Marlon Wayans? What the hell, give him a ticket back to the hood and at least put someone in the role who'd be good at it, Bruce Cambell (the guy in army of darkness) or John Delancie(<--spelling? The guy who played Q on StarTrek:TNG)
I want to go see it just because I'm a hardcore D&D fan even knowing full well how bad its going to be. God knows what the heck the company was thinking by letting this get licensed, they've let down...EVERY...D&D fan I've talked to about it. They should have known better then this. You make a D&D movie for D&D fans, not the general public. That way the general public that does see it might actually think its got something decent about it insted of just being expensive toilet paper. Make sequals for the general public, they almost always tend to be worse then the originals.

But of all the things that are bad about this, guess who controls D&D? TSR of course, and we alll know who owns TSR. Don't we guys and gals. :)
Want to do something constructive, write a NICE and CLEAR letter to WotC and tell them your...dissapointed, in this latest endevor. Maybe they'll listen and try harder next time insted of washing the entire job in a bottle of bleach. Just refrain from swearing as best you can and cut back the colorful metaphores. :)

Any movie in the previews with a guy saying "Now is your time-to die!" is gonna be stupid.

i agree with Ura. make a movie for fans. like Episode 1. when i went to it(i'm a hardcore SW fan) there were gangsters, fags, everyone. they didn't make if for SW fans, but instead for the public. they did the same with x-men, spiderman(coming), and now D&D. actors they shoudl of gotten are: Christopher Lambert, Sean connery, patrick stewart(luc-picard), matt damon, ben aflack, mel gibson(excellent in BraveHeart), Russel Crowe(Gladiator, must i say more), tom cruise, guy who was with tom hanks in the Green Mile, the black guy from the green mile, Tom hanks, lots of guys. but not this stuff. i am sick of directors/writers who think that a good public audience movie, that is rated PG-13 is going to be good. one, a D&D movie would have to be like NC-17(these are harsher). plus they should get some prison guys, who dont like life, have them be good actors, and give them real sharp swords, to REALLY kill something. not this fake blood that doens't even look real. and the wounds? hehe pulease. i hate this crap.

I saw it last night with my bf, Luke...I must say, we had a good laugh!...And Ura, the sad thing is, Marlon was the best actor in it...Well, I liked the Ranger a lot...

Special Effects?...Great!...I was really impressed, and the dragons looked unbelievable...Storyline?...Eh, it was ok...Not the worst fantasy sotryline out there...I was really upset that everytime there was a little challenge thrown into the way, only 1 or 2 people were involved, and both theives!...How lame!...I though, yeah, a barbarian will make things more interesting...I think he fought all of 12 secs...

The worst thing was the acting!...Ack!...Even Lauren would have looked good in there, Yellowjacket...The Princess, played by the daughter in American Beauty, was terrible!!!!...She was so bad...Like she was reading off a cue card...The villain, well, yeah, he was pretty stupid too...The mage girl! I wanted to stick her head in a vice...Why do people think that to act well they have to move their head all around??...

Oh well, they tried...Its going to be one of those movies they show on UPN, or WB, or one of those all day...I'd watch it again, just because it was fantasy...But it could have been a lot better...

Wait till Final Fantasy comes out...

All though I don't believe in much of what you've ever said, that's some funny shiznit!

I for one had a good time watching it, and as a hardcore D&D fan I have to say one thing: the Beholders were awesome as always... :D

So what do we do now? The movie was good for one viewing for me as I don't give a shiznit about acting, but the plot(the one selling point, why oh why could this not have been on Krynn duing the War of the Lance?????) was rather weird. Snails was the best character by far, sort of like Jar-Jar only not annoying and nauseating. He was actually funny most of the time ("Why do you get the girl and I get the dwarf?"), and I for one would go to see a second shot at this. Piece of advice next time: use a well established world. Use Krynn, as the Dragonlance novels are the best of the best of reading (Kang's brigade just never gives up :D)

Despite what everyone calls bad acting (I like overdramatizations ;)), I'd give D&D an 8 out of 10. For those of you who haven't seen it yet: Don't go into it looking through the eyes of a critic. Go watch it as someone who just wants to have some fun. Be casual about it

I couldn't stop laughing. :) I saw it about three hours ago, and I must say, any movie in which the dramatic scenes are more amusing than the comic relief ones needs _serious_ help.

I mean, come on! Two lines from the movie (paraphrased):

"If I give the scepter to you, I shalt commit an even greater crime, to deny my conscience..." (etc.)

"Daaaaaamn, man!"

Sorry, those two lines should NOT go side-by-side. Cat, I hate to disagree so adamantly, but I was literally _cringing_ whenever our dear friend Mr. Waylan stepped in front of the camera. D&D is a universe dominated (sadly) by white 20-30 year old males - The last thing we need is a black actor in a role that looks like it was pulled from an episode of Amos & Andy. Ouch, man, ouch. We don't need black stereotyping in that kind of flick.

The plot was also painfully thin, and filled with holes. There are continous references to Ridley being somehow 'special,' lines line "They must complete this task alone," "Only you are allowed to pass," and "Do you think he knows his full potential?" Is this possible subplot EVER explored? No, we get dim references, and nothing more. The same goes for other things.

***SPOILER!!!***

For example, when Ridley locates the wonderful little scepter at long last, he's been told by several characters that it must not be allowed to be used. So, where does he find this wonderful little device? In a cave, which is guarded by a magical wall that only allows Ridley to pass! Wow! The magic scepter that can't be allowed to fall into enemy hands is ALREADY PROTECTED JUST FINE! So, what does Ridley do? HE WALKS OUT OF THE CAVE!!!

WTF?

Also, did anyone notice the number of scenes that were 'ripped' from other movies? The cantina scene was ALL Star Wars. The sequence where the dragon munches on Profion was a direct rip from Jurassic Park. When blue lipstick boy is chasing Snails? Damned if that wasn't Darth chasing down Luke - complete with music! And the final sword fight between lipstick boy and Ridley? THOSE WERE FRIGGING LIGHT SABERS!!!

WTF?

I will give it this - The CGI was absolutely stunning. The dragons were magnificent, the beholders were amazing, and the landscapes were amazing. Sadly, that doesn't make up for the fatal flaws the movie seemed to emanate at every turn.

Ouch, man, ouch. That was painful to watch, and more painful to think about. If you like laughing at horrible movies, this will be your uptopia.

I haven't seen the D&D movie. I don't intend to see the D&D movie. I have, however seen the previews for it.

And from that, I could tell that I could get a better screenplay from analying feces and animal entrails, and better performances from stone golems.

The CG was the only redeeming quality of those trailers. And only just barely.

This really sucks.I would love to defend it but I can't.About a year and a half ago mabey two years,I bought a copy of the screenplay off of ebay. It's for sure the right one,but there are so many more characters, battles, insights, and details that ended up on the cutting room floor it is pathetic.:(The story it could have been would have been up there with fight club, the matrix, and army of darkness.Instead for whatever reasons a lot of the meat of the story was omitted.I guess I am biased in this for having read it in whole. But after spending 30 bucks for my girl and I to see it I wouldn't even get it as a rental unless they come up with a directers cut.Even at that, the film needed at least another 45 mins to an hour to flesh out the story properly.Oh the other ending altough happy was not this contrite little everone lives forever in happyness horsepucky.Snails died a valiant honorable death and stayed there, hell there are 8 pages after that. After waiting, and not knowing for sure it would even be made I was disappointed. But if I had not read how good it might have been I'm not sure if i am giveing it a fair chance or not.
