I've been messing around with various versions of this deck and i found death cloud was awful, as was relying on Kuros, and Death Clouds.

10 Forests
10 Swamps
2 Mountains

4 Glacial Ray

4 Hana Kami
4 Wear Away
4 Kodoma's Reach
3 Sakura Tribe Elder
3 Eternal Witness

4 Soulless Revival
4 Rend Flesh
3 Thief of Hope
3 Kiku, Night's Flower
2 Hideous Laughter
2 Seizan, Perverter of Truth

we've got untargeted Removal at instant speed, selective removal, artifact removal, enchantment removal, chump blockers, land acceleration.

A couple time Seizan just kills with the upkeep cost.

Too bad this deck randomly loses to Death Cloud and Kokusho.;)

Except for that you're wrong - he's one of the most popular type II kill conditions right now.

yea it is.
I always think its funny when a previously phased out card comes back and the type II players scramble to recollect them! :)

thing is, death cloud makes me dump my hand, not something i want to do with splicing and holding cards that recur others.

Far as im concerned, they never left

The best splicers are the very cheap ones:

  • Kodaman's Might
  • Glacial Ray
  • Blessed Breath
  • Soulless Revival

These lend themselves quite well to a creature/manabase of

4 Sakura-Tribe Elder
4 Eternal Witness
4 Kodama's Reach

Just mix in what you want and go nutso.

I agree with all but blessed breath. To me that spell may be cheap but, not worth it by any means.

Psychic puppetry for example. It's cheap and can possibly ward away 1 attacker but, unless its with a combo, its kind of useless.

I think candle's glow would be the cheap white replacement 1W/1W cost, instant speed, with the potential to shield 3 and gain 3, yielding a buffer of 6 life each time you use it.

Type II's retardedness is dependent on what sets are currently legal in it. Right now, Type II is at about average retardeness level. Affinity is really annoying, even meta-game warping, but it's not completely dominating the format. Things aren't as good now as they were when it was Ody-Ons blocks in Type II, but they're better than they were when it was Urza's-Masques.

The idea of a limited format such as type II is not a bad one - what's bad is if you only care about Type II - I don't. To me, enjoying Magic is a matter of experiencing all the variety it can offer you. To make a braod analogy:

Type II-Only players = Dogmatic Christians.
People Who Hate Type II = Self-Righteous Atheists
People Who Actually Have an Open Mind = Me

To be fair, Type II will always have a hard time jiving with the CPA because the CPA is naturally opposed to rules and competetiveness and Type II is the most inherently structured format. That said, as a closet game theorist, I really enjoy the fact that Type II is constantly in a revolution of balance. It always changes, and the devlopers of the game are always concerned about keeping it balanced, so power always shifts.

Yeah, I like Dark Ritual-Duress-Hymn on turn 1 as much as the next guy, but it gets old if that's all you do.

True .Then again i judge decks independently. I'll generally try a new idea deck, or a deck that works pretty well, and based upon how rough i think competition is, i'll break out a more powerful deck. Some are just so good they almost never see the light of day.

I think the best part about trying keeping type II balanced is testers keep older cards in consideration somewhat, but sometimes (mirrodin block) they just spit out a handful of infinite combo generators :D, which is nice.

Oversoul

The Tentacled One
No, Type II is always retarded because its growth it impeded (the definition of retarded) by sets rotating out. It gets cool cards like Dark Ritual, and then loses them, thereby impeding its growth as a format...

Technically, I can't argue with Oversoul's semantics. I don't think it's a bad format though.

Oversoul

The Tentacled One
Okay, so it has been worse. I'll give you that. I am just not impressed with Kokusho at all...
