I picked up a box and a few 75 count tourney packs... it's great!

The guy got them off the truck and told me to open the box up and pick my box of boosters... it was almost like christmas!

Nah, guy was sellin'em to me for $85 a piece... Yeah, so I help out a little and they give me price deals (guy is charging $120 a box normally).

And now he's proposed me with the deal that if I become judge certified and help out with tournaments and such he'll cut me in on the prices... Cost plus 20% on all merchandise. I'm thinking about it... dunno...

This sounds so much like you're talking about dope or something, instead of Magic cards...

Yeah, Nightstalkers the cardboard crack dealer. He's standing outside your kid's school, handing out free samples to get the poor tykes hooked. A shame! (why don't he give me samples...)

ha ha ha... I'm still thinking about getting at least a lvl 1 judge certification to help out a little.

Certification isn't easy; you have to have a Level 3 avaible somewhere somewhat close to you to train and test you, and you have to know the rules inside and out, as well as the penalty and floor rules.

And my only problem is not having a lvl 3 judge around here. Oh well, I can still do organizers and become the in store guru until they can find a judge willing to go here too.

Usually you have to go TO the Level 3 to get to train.

See if the owner will sponsor you to do this. You can get a list of the 3+ judges at www.wizards.com/dci using the Judge Database.

Why is there a need to have a certified judge when you don't have a large enough metro to have a Level 3? At that point, sounds like you'll be running FNM events, not preleases or anything. Just become registered as a tournament organizer with the DCI (effectively Judge Level 0) and work tourneys that way. No need for the red tape pathway if it ain't called for in your town/area.

And don't use placeholders *coughs* yeah....definitely don't use 'em...

Yeah, you're right. The guy wants to do prerelease events and everything else.

There's a good 20-30 players in the area around the shop alone and I've kinda convinced the guy's only competition to pack up and move a town over.

Prerelease Events are VERY difficult to get to do. VERY difficult. I've been trying to get them to Mississippi for a while; I may have found a lead, but I'm not sure.

Good Luck, Nightstalkers, and if you need any help, feel free to ask me. Then I'll point you elsewhere if I don't know... :)

Nightstaker,
You're from Indy? Try to talk to the people that run the magic events at GenCon. There should be lots of people who can point you in the right direction for getting certified. I'll get you the contact info for the TO in your area and you could work a few of his events to get your certification.

Nightstalkers: You could talk to KJ. He helps out with some types of events around his area and gets a cut of the pie...

First Nightstalkers sounds like a crack dealer, and now Spidey sounds like a mafia. "Yeah, there's 'events' and you'll get a piece of the pie. Capishe?"

Nightstaker,
Your TO is Alan Hockman, but he's from Chicago. Looks like Indy is SOL. Do you have pre-releases? Go to one of them and talk to the TO running it.
BTW, I'm KJ's TO in the Pittsburgh area, well sort of, kinda...... At PA States I am.... and some GPT's..... But only in the Burgh.

Got a box and played a sealed deck thingy. Somehow got 3 Mindmoils, 1 Foil. Joy.

I like (quick list off top of head, there's only cards I've seen here_...

Last Gasp
B1, Inst, Target creature gets -3/-3
(Enfeeblement was playable, this is better and splashable)

Rolling Spoil
GG2, Sorc, Destroy target land if B was used to cast it all critters get -1/-1
(landkill that kills Birds & Elves is excellent stuff. Play with the 1/2 Snake mana guy from Champions.)

Frenzied Goblin
R, Summ, 1/1, When attacks may pay R to stop target creature blocking
(he's awesome, a goblin with built-in removal of their best blocker. Grade-A 1cc goblin)

Sellsword Brute
R1, Summ, 2/2, When dies you lose 2 life
(top notch red Grizzly, better than Ironclaws?)

Telling Time
U1, Inst, Look at top 3 cards, put 1 in hand, 1 on top library, 1 on bottom
("the new Impulse". Probably every deck with islands will play 4. Makes blue counter decks much stronger)

Grave Shell Scarab
BGG2, Summ, 4/4, 1 sac: Draw a card, Dredge 1
(Dredge 1 is good. Dredge 1 on a card you can sacrifice to draw a card is AMAZING).
