Rare Commons?

Is there such a thing?
I was checking out the uncommon and rare boxes at the new store the other day and found Rancor with a $1.00 sticker on it and an Incinerate with a $2.00 sticker on it, errrrr?
And guess what? I bought them. I have never been able to find anyone who's had extra of these for trade. Other commons I can't find are: Counterspell, Rewind, Duress, Muscle Sliver, Vine Trellis, Yavimaya Elder, Mogg Fanatic, & Mana Leak.
True, some of these are hard to find because they're from old sets, but I couldn't find them back when they were NEW sets.
Any thoughts?

Really? I've NEVER had any problem getting commons(mainly because I buy a couple boxes of every new set, but that's besides the point).

They didn't actually have the rare symbol on them, did they?

If they didn't, they're just the "more useful" commons. Since they get used a lot, they're worth a little more than other commons, maybe up to the uncommon/rare range (especially if you say you can't find any in your area). The same was true back in the day; a Sol Ring was considered worth more than a Lace of any sort.

I never had a problem with commons of "newer" sets (when I got them) because I always got a box. I have no idea on how available a good common would be if I never bought anything and relied on trading.

I think Mr. P or someone mentioned they had lots of commons from sets in 7th edition thread in General; ask them :)

Here are a few more Commons that usually sport a $1 or higher price tag:

Hymn to Tourach
Arcane Denial
Duress
Lightning Bolt
Impulse
Order of Leitbur
Order of the Ebon Hand
Lotus Petal

Oh, and in A, B, Un. Rev. and 4th Ed's, Counterspell was an uncommon.

It`s outrageous to suggest any FE common should cost money, seeing as they printed four copies of them!

Bolt is expensive, given - even over here they were like £2.50ish. Serrated Arrows were another expensive common. But I tihnk this is just a commonality problem. I keep four copies of every card I have, except for the really good ones I will use in more than one deck at once, like I have 12 Duress, 8 Rancor, 12 Fanatics, 16 Shock...

I used to have the same problem, so whenever a new set comes out I try to stock up on useful commons. Ex.: Terminate, Hull Breach, etc.

That's why I carry binders full of useful commons and uncommons. I currently have nearly 40 plain ol' Counterspells and about 2 dozen Blastoderms.

Sure, a lot of people sneer at'em, but I also trade them in multiples for cheap rares I want.

Outside of that, I've got thousands of commons/uncommons going back to Unlimited. Most of the better stuff has already been traded away, but I've got lots of stuff for theme decks or set finishers.

And you never know, some previously worthless common may be valuable some day (see: Lightning Bolt), or get reprinted as a tradable rare (see: Hurricane; Serra Angel).

If Pestilence comes back as a rare, I may actually break even on this game, since I've got over a thousand of'em!

So if you need any "worthless" commons or uncommons for any particular reason, just let me know.

Magic cards, no matter what rarity, are only worth what someone will pay for them. If it is harder to find a Lightning Bolt than it is a Pale Moon due to popularity, and if there is more demand for Lightning Bolt, then they will be more expensive.

They just seem more rare because when you get the third Tainted Well, you go "Shoot. Not another one!" and when you get your third Mogg Fanatic you say "Hm! Now I only need one more!".:)

I've noticed that in MLB Showdown, another Wizards game, though. I alone have about 4 Mark Graces. My playgroup probably has 50. But we have 1 David Segui. That is most likely collation (sp?) problems. I believe there were talks of some such problems in Magic, but I don't know if they were just rumors. Were those ever found to be based on reality?

All I know is, I'm CHOKING on Eladamri's Calls, but can't pull a Deadapult to save my life.

I have some Deadapults... and I'll trade them for your Eladamri's Calls! :) Really!

Heh. I shouldn't gripe...I pulled JUST the right amount, actually.

One for my set.
Four for a playset, if I want a deck with four in it.
One for the extra set I'm making.
