Whenever I need to look up individual cards, I either use the Oracle (available at Wizards website, except that I can never remember what links to click on to get there), or I use the summaries at Crystal Keep. If I need to look up a group of cards (say, all green cards with toughness greater than 4), I use the Ultimate Spoiler Generator at MTGnews.com

If you download Apprentice, not only do you get an online Magic gaming program, but its deck editor has all the cards; even portal, unglued and invitationals. It truly is the oink. Go to dragonstar.com
The Magic Suitcase also has all of that, plus apparently a deck capability that lets you play two of your decks against each other in the same program (but I haven't figured out how to do that yet ) But it gives mana curves or some type of analysis... you can pick that up at www.perldragon.com/~suitcase

From what I understand, Apprentice is the one where you can construct a deck and then connect to other people on the Internet and play. Magic Suitcase is where you can construct two decks that you can then play against each other (with you playing both sides).

Apprentice is the original Magic Online. It allows you to build whatever deck you want with whatever cards you want and then allows you to connect via internet with players all over the world. The best place to download apprentice is www.e-league.com for it includes the Oracle patch needed to update your sets from the original apprentice download. The one thing that apprentice does not tell you is where to actually meet people to connect with to play. The best and actually only place I have found is on irc.newnet.net in channel #apprentice. There is constantly over 100 people there waiting to play any format that you wish. Try it out, because once you do you will become hooked.
