Phyrexian Scuta

I know everyone is kinda sick of Planeshift previews, but here!:

Phyrexian Scuta 3B
Creature- Zombie
Kicker-Pay 3 life. (You may pay 3 life in addition to any other costs as you play this spell.)
If you paid the kicker cost, Phyrexian Scuta comes into play with two +1/+1 counters on it.
3/3

I think this card deserves a new thread.

This and sinister strength will bring about Black Speed...will it not?

It's good, but no Juzam...then again...I wouldn't pay more than $10 for a Juzam...it's just a fattie! A good fattie, but still just a fattie.

On the contrary, if you play Phyrexian Scuta with kicker, you basically get a Juzam Djinn that's splashable into many decks as long as black is somewhere there. And, instead of damage every turn, you only take three turn's effect at once and that's it!!!! I'll be sure to play three of these(any more would be suicide) in MY deck. what rarity is it?

I like it. I think it is a good replacement for Juzam if you don't have the $200 to buy one. I think they are equally good because if your in a long game then the Phyrexian Scuta is better but if the game is going to be over in a couple of turns then the Juzam is better.

Ransac: It is a rare.

It's a rare. Hmm. Well, I'm sure I'll score some. I usually buy three boxes of the new set. That gives me plenty to trade with.

It's BETTER than Juzam, IMHO, with ease! Only one black mana, and less total life loss, even in a situation where it's a four turn win. Absolutely amazing.

Now, if only it didn't have to contend with Blastoderm...

Heck, I'm GLAD he contends with Blastoderm. He contends with *and eats* Blastoderm. Let's also remember that this card is being printed in the same set as the creature enchantment for 2 mana that gives the enchanted creature +3/+1 and turns it black...

I want this guy. I want three of him. I want him for my black/blue deck (which is looking more and more *satanic* by the day).

this guy is amazing! he can be fired off turn two via dark ritual, hes immune to most black removal spells, and im not sure bout the rest of you, but his picture is astonishing

...I think this card will be huge, in T2, and out of T2. The ability to cast a 5/5 on a second turn, for 3 life is really not that bad.

As Zadok already mentioned, this badboy is better than Juzam - what I say is, "Waaay, better than Juzam".

Let's face it, Mercenaries didn't see the light of day (or actually, Light of Day stoped the Mercs), and WotC is just treating all those satanically angery Black players (such as myself) with a new creature that is actually very playable.

From all the ways Black could deal with a Blastoderm (how many ways anyway, 1? 2?), I think this thing will be THE most common...since a Black deck, or even a deck with little Black, WILL for sure include SOME of these things.

Personally, I luved suicide along time ago, and I'll luve it like never before until the end of time - 4 copies of these badboys is a sure thing...for me.

Oooh. Spiffy. Unfortunately, my feeble mind fails me. Ritual was in Masques, was it not?

Also, is there a pic for this card yet? It better have good art...

Hmm...
This is really good, but the fact that it uses a kicker cost to make it good does present some possible problems.

First, like all kicker permanents, if it gets Parallax'd away, it comes back as an ordinary 3/3. Still nothing to sneeze at, but you paid 3 life for a 5/5, so you're still getting screwed here.

Next, bounce strategies (including the popular Wash Out, Withdraw, and Recoil) will really get on your nerves. If you have to keep playing him, that 3 life adds up very quickly.

Finally, black/red will snicker at you just before they Terminate (soon to be a staple card) your big guy.

Other than that, this is pretty impressive, and is likely to see play in plenty of decks. I don't think that mono-black suicide is the way to go, though. I'm thinking something along the lines of blue/black control, so that you can counter Light of Day and bounce any blockers that may get into play.

I'd also try it in red/black control. Simply kill everything your opponent plays with Terminate/Terror, and beat the living crap out of them with this. Landkill can help diffuse the risk of an unfortunate Light of Day here as well.

Is this the Black creature that's "the best since Phyrexian Negator?"

It may not necessarily suck, but it ain't that good, either. Don't get me wrong, I love Black, and try to abuse it every chance I get, but this is decidedly...eh.

With all of the emphasis on bouncing creatures in Invasion, and because of Terminate, I think this card will be in everybody's trade binder instead of their decks.

If it had trample, or weren't affected by summoning sickness, or flying, or sum'n, I might get more excited. But as it is, it just looks like Zombie theme deck material, which ain't all bad!

With an ability like kicker, you can't ask for much(unless it's Kavu Titan). But, a 5/5 with one drawback and for only one black mana is a great card to me.

Bah, this is *much* better than Kavu Titan. He eats Titans for breakfast and then some (being black tends to be good I hear ;) )

He's hardly 'eh'. He's not as good as Negator (nothing could ever be... :( ) but he's still excellent.

For Apollo (and any other phoenixes out there) you can see him at:

the picture is slightly blurred, but not too badly.

Another Zombie hrmm... B/R Zombie could be very cool...

Black has been lacking in quality beatdown for some time, it good to see one of Scuta's ability in print. This is a card I would definately get a few copies from. Furthermore, it has great staying power when in play because very few cards can get rid of it.

I still stand by my statement that I will have 3 in my deck. Like I always reiterate, THIS CARD ROCKS!!!

It is the black fatty of choice. Certainly better than Derelor, it`s nearest T2 rival. I like it, but I`m not sure what deck it goes in.

Personally I prefer the 4/3 for BR1 that lets you reuse a Rat.

...and therefore combos nicely, sickeningly even, with Lord of the Undead. Or two Lords. Better yet.
