Overpowered cards

Do you guys agree with this thought?

I realized that the majority of cards that have caused problems in Magic tournanments are those that accelerate mana or allow you to paly things for free and are therefore banded. Tolarian academy, affinity, bunch of blue speels i cant think of, moxes, loti(is it Lotuses?), dark ritual, from graveyard creatures deck, oath of druids, the cloud of faeries mechanic, etc.

If you agree, wouldnt it basicacly mean that magic is fair when players actually have to pay real mana for their cards?

So wouldn't the Solution to overpowered cards is to make them cost actual mana.

It seems like what you're referring to is "fixing" cards by increasing mana costs. That is one way of doing things. Mox Sapphire is too good free? Make it cost 2 and come into play tapped (Sky Diamond). This concept has been shown to work in many instances, but it's nothing new or particularly amazing...

Agreed. The reason why the cards are "overpowered" or "strong" is because they break or allow the breaking of the normal rules of Magic. For instance, you normally can only play one land per turn. So that would mean you can play a one cc on turn 1, a 2 cc on turn 2, etc. But if you play a mana producer of some type on of of these turns, say a BoP, on turn 2 you can cast a 3 cc spell, one turn earlier than normal. Add more mana accelerators and since nowadays a spell with a greater effect costs more, if you can cast it sooner than normal, you have an advantage.

Same concept with drawing cards - normally you can only draw one card per turn. If you can increase that number, you're going to be drawing more cards and spells than your opponent, which gives you more options each turn as your mana increases.

So yeah, the "solution" to fair Magic is have everything be played at the turn of its cc. But you might as well extend it further. Why shuffle and have the randomness of the deck? Why not be sure to have a steady stream of mana? Or what about the card pool? Why not have everyone have access and be able to play any card they want, as opposed to an old-timer from Revised playing a "new guy" who started with Scourge.

It's simply the nature of a card game itself. And I suspect no one really wants a "boring" game of being able to cast spells on the turn of their cc. Players want to be able to be faster than the other guy :)

Was that sarcasim Spidey?

...I LIKE IT! :p

I get the whole 'overpowered' card thing but I have come to the realization that someone, somewhere will have a better deck than me,....ALWAYS! And chances are that I WILL play against them either in a tourney or in casual play. I've learned to deal with it.

However,......sometimes, just sometimes, I'm that better deck person. :D

This was really just a rant at wotc to stop doing this. Mana accel is fine but not for free and that tapping for 1 is safe, 2 costs 2 life, and that 4/4 s for free are not good for the game. 4/4 are fine but that there must me a cost to get it, not just seven 0 cost artifacts.

Well, I'm willing to grant WOTC a few mistakes :) They like to push the envelope to challenge players and sometimes the line is crossed <shrug>

And on occasion it gets crossed multiple times in every set of a block...

Oh well, I sort of like it that way. I'm sadistic...
