Astral Slide
Pro Tour Venice - Champion
Pre-Scourge

10 Plains
9 Mountains
4 Forgotten Cave
4 Secluded Steppe

2 Gempalm Incinerator
4 Exalted Angel
2 Jareth, Leonine Titan
2 Daru Sanctifier

4 Lightning Rift
4 Astral Slide
4 Akroma's Blessing
3 Renewed Faith
4 Starstorm
4 Akroma's Vengeance

Sideboard:
4 Avarax
3 Demystify
3 Disciple of Grace
2 Akroma, Angel of Wrath
1 Oblation
2 Gempalm Incinerator

I have it on good authority that the board Disciples of Grace should have been Pacifisms. This was pre-Zombies, however, so who knows? White Knights are another possibility.

I still think this is THE deck to beat, along with Goblins and Zombies. In a format where islands are weak, this Aggro-Control deck leaning to the Control side is the closest thing we have to "Control," barring one of you abusing Control White or BW Control, with or without Clerics.

As far as its enemies go:

Stabilizer? Sure, it hurts, but the deck will change to have cycling cards that are better if they need to be hardcast, AND it mains Akroma's Vengeance. And besides, Stabilzer is a sideboard card.

Sulfuric Vortex? Ouch. So Exalteds can't gain life. They can still inflict 4 damage per swing. And "the lovely" Akroma, Angel of Wrath couldn't care less. And the deck sports two Sactifiers and Demystifys side.

So sure, the deck takes a bit of a hit, post Scourge. The question is, do the gains outweigh the losses? Maybe not, but the deck is still strong, and I predict many of the better players to play it. And bad players who shamelessly netdeck Champions' decks without knowing how to play them. Well, what the heck. Thank God for the first three rounds. There can't be good players without bad players.

So, what does the deck gain? Decree of Annihilation? Is that playable? Was Epicenter? What else?

This deck's natural enemy was B/G Patriarch's Bidding decks, and to a certain extent, Beasts. Bidding placed ZERO decks in the top Eight at Venice. Indeed, the only swamps were in the 3-color Vegetation deck. Bidding has been replaced by Zombies as a better version, anyway. Maindeck Biddings if you wish, but I'll side them, because yes, they hurt this deck quite a bit, and are rather useless vs Tribal decks, as you can't always be certain of drawing your Withered Wretches, or having the mana to abuse them if you do, before you die horribly.

Beasts? Beasts is funky. I love the deck. We'll see if it can overcome two certain Warchiefs I'm thinking of. It gains a Warchief, itself. Should be a good fight all around. This Block is extremely balanced; lots of good fights ahead.

IMO as always,
Rakamir

Okay - I'm becoming even more convinced that the G-W deck can beat this one out...

With devoted Caretakers, and naturalize, nova clerics...

It'd be a battle, but one you could come out on top of...

Silklash spider in itself is dangerous enough... and giving it pro-white... stops it from being slid...

I'll try coming up with a decklist, and see what I can do...

This looks like a stronger slide deck - but I still think G/W can take it...

train, he plans on beating you with Stoic Champions, Rorixes, and Wing Shards.

I don't know that I have a general build to beat this and all others...

I'd even run this deck as it seems my style...

But i'd throw in some Silver Knights to live through the Starstorm and then commence with the beats...

I'd also run 1 or 2 dawn elementals in place of a Vengeance and a land - I think 25 land is just too much...
Especially when you're cycling, and getting to your land as needed...

Most of my ideas would be base deck and not just sideboard...

Bright-san was actually testing with maindeck Silver Knights, then decided to board them as they just weren't getting the job done against too many decks, and if you read his article you'll see what he brought in as being much more effective.

This meant, of course, that he had to throw out his old Goblins (really, Sligh in his case) sideboard, and he provides a new one for Gobbos at the end of the article.

25 lands seems fine to me. He actually cut two lands from Osyp's deck, from which he tuned this. He got rid of some of the heavier spells, putting a few of them in the board. I'm not sure how effective Daru Sanctifier would be vs Vortex, in a deck with Carbonize and Shock. I'd play Demystifies, personally.

I'd like to point out the Silver Knights base deck...

Once they live through the Starstorm, you just beat down... They stop goblins, and cancel out the opposing slice and dice(if played) as well as the rift...

If anything - they're fodder until Akroma Lands, or the Exalteds Fly...

I still think the Dawn Elementals would make the deck stronger as the also live through the starstorm... They also block opposing exalteds, and the only hope against them, IMHO, is someone running Black...

Which i don't think championships will see much of...

The deck took 1st... but probably could be a little stronger...

And still too many lands...

Astral Slide just got booted from my mini-tourney's next round of eight, after going 0-2 in matches in the first two rounds, 1-4 in games. It seems Astral Slide is outdated now. The combo of Stabilizer AND Sulfuric Vortex just kills it vs Gobbos. Just pounds it.

Round 1: RW Slideless Control, called Knight Train

Game 1, dies quickly to the more controllish build. Game 2 goes on forever, but Slide is, let's face it, an-Aggro-Control deck leaning toward Control, and Knight Train is dedicated Control. Patience wins the day, or....loses it for Slide.

Round 2: Goblins

Wins easily first game, going first. Starstorms are too much for Gobbos. Didn't need Silver Knights.
2nd game: in come the Silver ones, but with only one secluded steppe as the only white mana source, Goblins makes short work of things. Stabilizer 3rd turn didn't help. It fact they hurt. A lot.
3rd game: Sulfuric Vortex makes short work before a Knight can be drawn.

Either RW Control or BW Control seem to be the way to go for this archetype. You can try MWC, but don't blame me if you lose with MWC, cuz white needs help, jes not from Astral Slide. R.I.P.

You know, I just thought of a card that could place a nail in Slide's coffin: Underworld Dreams. I can predict a lot of Zombie players sideboarding that just in case they face slide...

I hear you, and wish that card was available in OnBC, because I loved that card. The main problem with the deck is the card, Astral Slide. It's too slow now. It comes out after boarding vs fast decks and slow decks. Lightning Rift is still great, but Stabilizer hurts it more than Silver Knight hurts Goblins, seeing as how Goblins may win before the Knight is drawn, let alone played, and Slide asks for the long, slow game, thus practically begging for a Stabilizer to be drawn/cast. train's Knight Train, with its 8 maindeck knights and only 11 cycling cards (about half of Slide's) is much better than Slide now post-Scourge, IMO, and in my playtesting as well.
