On Judges and Exhaustion

It's been a long day. I made a mistake last night - I assumed my roommate would be coming home, and would like to be informed of my intentions to get up at 7 AM. He did not come home. But I didn't get to sleep 'til 2 because of it. I woke up at 6:40, and left the dorm fifteen minutes later. The cafeteria was closed, so I went without breakfast, a mistake I will never make again.

Nearly an hour and a half later, I arrived at the Seattle Center Olympic Room, the site of the day's PTQ for San Diego. I was early. I realized this when I noticed that the room was completely lacking in human habitation. About ten minutes later, the first judges started carrying in things. I introduced myself the day's Judgeling, taking the Certification Test.

I had no idea Judging was that tough. I spend my hours playing Magic being very careful about my own situation, carefully considering the options available to me and my opponent, choosing the correct course of action, and making sure not to break any rules. That's hard. Trying to do it for 68 people is INSANE. My respect for the guys wandering around in black and white striped shirts just jumped up a dozen notches, because that was HARD work. Just staying standing that long is a bit of challenge for someone as shoddily constructed as I am (my back is one long painful crack waiting to happen).

But I did it. I passed the test with an 87/100. If that's good or not, I don't know - But I know it passed me. :) Hurrah! And for committing one day, I learned a LOT. Some stats for the longest Magic-related day of my life:

Number of game losses I was present for: 4 (maybe 5, I can't remember)

Number of decklists misread by yours truly: 2

Number of decklists registered improperly: Too many to count

Number of dumb questions from me: Equal to the mass of the universe in grams

Number of times I got to correct a real judge: 1

Number of times a real judge got to correct me: 6 (Real judges are winning this race...)

Number of "wierd facts" I found out about but can't TALK about: 4

Number of Advil consumed: 2

Number of torn up Chance Encounters: 3

Number of questions I thought I missed on the test: 15+

Number of questions actually missed: 5-8

Like I said, it's been quite a day. But it's been great. I haven't had so much fun with Magic in months. Judging is great, and I fully intend to continue working for the local tourney scene. :)

New life experience.

Good job Zadok! But be warned, it'll take forever to get your Judges card.

When I took my test, since my scence is relativly small, the level 3 moved around with me and gave me difficult scenarios to judge. It wasn't even part of the tournament, but oh well.

I did a little worse than you on my test, so kudos to you. But that won't happen again :)

Welcome to the lovely status that is level 1 judging :) I hope you get a judging job, because I sure as hell haven't yet.

That judge test is HARD! Loniac and I thought I missed one too many, but he put that I had thought of Urza's trample rules instead of current rules

(A.K.A. Ignore this rule.):
502.9d An attacking creature with trample ignores any blocking creatures that can't have damage assigned to them.
Protection can have trample damage assigned to the creature nowdays, so boom. It's now:

502.9d Ignore this rule.
:{ )

I still havn't gotten the judging card. I got the christmas/holiday present of a foil Memory Lapse, though.

Congrads on getting your lvl 1 status.

So do they still have the question on how many Scryb Sprites would it take to kill a first striking Sengir Vampire?

Just wondering :)

No, that wasn't there. :) 12, btw. 4 Sprites, four Clones, and four Dopplegangers. Why the Dopplegangers aren't imitating the Vampire, I don't know.

In my version of the test, I had a Sacred Mesa in play.

I had to get past the upkeep and block the vampire and kill it.

I had "enough" mana for anything I wanted to do.

I forgot if I could make one before upkeep... anyone remember?

TheOrgg: It's not proper to discuss test questions. But, it really depends on what version of the rules you are playing with. IE, when did you take the test?

Zadok: I already congratulated you yesterday after you passed, but I will congratulation you again on-line as well. Congratulations!!!

Why isn't it 8?
All 8 block, Vampire kills 4 before they deal damage, then the 4 remaining ones deal 4 to it. Sure, all of your Sprites die, but so does the Vampire...and that's the goal of the question.

After First Strike damage the Vampire gets 4 +1/+1 counters.

And I would respond with "It's an Auction of the People deck, Neo." :D

Nah. Then it would have had 12 Black Lotii and 34 Scryb Sprites.
