Derailing the music thread to talk about literature...

I never made it through that book - is the journey worth it? (if I still have it on my bookshelf)
Couldn't tell you. I'm biased: I read a lot of Tolkien when I was 10 or 11 years old and liked it back then. I later decided that I thought it was mostly bad. And then, as an adult, I read a book by E.R. Eddison, who was basically the precursor to Tolkien and probably had the same traits I took issue with in Tolkien's work, only moreso. These days, I don't even pretend to know what to think about Tolkien's work. But I will note that his early fiction was written for children, and that interest in The Hobbit by older readers was what made The Lord of the Rings possible. His posthumous stuff, including The Silmarillion, reads a lot more like something written by a philologist, which it is. I think that happened because The Lord of the Rings was such a success, so there was enough interest in publishing manuscripts by the dead author of that trilogy, whereas when Tolkien was alive, he would have found it harder to get publishers to sell his own made-up mythology, which was written in the same style as material he'd translated from genuine mythology, to a popular audience.

The Silmarillion isn't a narrative story in the same way that the other books are, like Oversoul says, it is published like an older mythology with a story structure more like The Bible than a novel. I happen to think it's brilliant but as has been said quite unconventional.
