New Magic Site

I found this new magic site that's kind of a mix between MTGnews and CPA. I think it could be an ok site once people start going to it. The URL is www.magicpalace.net if anyone is interrested in checking the site out.

He's right. It's a pretty good site, once it gets a stating player pool. 4 people just aren't quite enough to hold a conversation....

*sniff*

Smells like spam, to me...

I'm gonna let it go, since it IS MtG related, and furthermore, a new site that should probably get some support. Despite that, advertising your sites on other message boards without any logical reason seems a bit shady to me, especially when initially claiming that it isn't your site.

But I won't let these go forever.

A couple of users promote their sites occasionally in Off-Topic... nodnarb? the Belgarion dude? Aside from Slick initially claiming he "found" the site, I don't see the difference (and he corrected that pretty soon).

It would have been fine if he had never mentioned that he had made it.

Disagree - That would have been worse. :) I know Slick in person, and it frustrated me to no end that he didn't own up to the site being his. If he hadn't put that up there, I would have found this thread tantamount to flat-out lying. Uncool.

Off-Topic I can ignore. And, as I said, I won't do anything to this thread. In fact, I'll sign up for the site. I just don't like the idea of encouraging people to post "Visit this neat site I found!" threads, basically saying "Gimme more hits!" If you want an example of why, go to the MtGNews forums - They're full of 'em, and they're annoying as all get out. Allowing things like this thread is one step from saying "Spam me!" :) I'm not gonna let that happen, so I'm setting this as basically precedent. Off-Topic forum is definately more well-suited to this, and if you do post something like this, admit ownership.

[It should also be noted that Nodnarb, etc, to my knowledge, never set up a THREAD to advertise his site. He's posted of it's existance in some other threads while staying on topic, and I think it's in his sig, but this is quite different... -- Zadok001, edited in.]

I gotta agree with Zadok on this. This sort of thing sets a bad precedent. I don't mind it this once but I'd hate to see this place filled up with worthless "go to my site!" threads.

New CPA member, just a few posts, and he's "found" a good new site...I think most of us would have figured it out eventually...

Agree with Zadok. He should have tld it was his site earlier. Honesty is the best policy, at least when the admins are watching ;)

Just for the record, again, he's not that 'new.' :) Lurker-esque, he's been on here for quite a while. He just doesn't post much at all.

To me, the real problem is making this a thread topic, basically an advertisement. The shady side is not cool, but not what bothers me in particular.

I concur with Zadok, and this really should be in Off-Topic at best.

talk about controversy doing your publicity job for you...

Okay, here's the way I see it. In Off Topic, there's several posts by users asking people to visit their site. I might have named nodnarb unfairly; I was just pulling names that I might have remembered doing something like that. Actually, when I got there yesterday, Mr.Xavorox had a post like that. I honestly can't remember the others without doing the search but I don't think it's that important right now. Suffice to say others have done it.

The difference? They're in Off-Topic and this one is here (even though most of thos in Off-Topic deal with Magic also) and Slick didn't 'fess up to owning it in the first place. Well, Zadok, you didn't first mention you knew Slick personally and seems like you had a slight bias towards him through that relationship. So I was judging your post by the assumption that Slick was basically "anonymous". Does that still matter? Not really, to me.

So NOW everyone knows Slick owns the site and is asking people to visit. Is this still any different from the other similar posts in Off-Topic? Not really... so maybe this SHOULD get moved there and everything is hunky-dory, since the majority of people who spoke up here apparently feel that's the appropriate place. Otherwise, I feel if the majority of people feel these "advertisement" posts should NOT be encouraged, I don't see why they should be put ANYWHERE, General OR Off-Topic, by ANY user.
