Well the day started out as these things normally do. I woke up at about 6, attempted for about half an hour to wake up my friend "J". We left at about 6:45. so we're makin' good time down 95 and we're roughly about 5 minutes away from the Hyatt Regency where the prerelease is going to take place. US 50 is closed probably because of some hurricane related issue, but no matter we can just get on 395 via the detour. The detour didn't quite work as 395 was also closed. fast forward about 2 hours we're in Richmond on their Jefferson Davis Highway, as opposed to the one in Arlington.
So at about 11:00 we finally get to the prerelease. We sign up for the pink tournament which is going to start at about roughly 12, I promptly vented my frustation to Ed(the friendly neighborhood comic store owner) and proceeded to obtain the 3 Verdant Forces I needed to complete my Secret Force deck(this brightened up my day
) My friend Russel comes in from the game hall and tells me a judge wants to see me. I walk up and ask him whats going on. He tells me there was a mix up with the list and that I can just sit at the judge's table and open and register my stuff, he then proceeds to hand me my tournament pack and boosters. I weight for the head judge to tell the players in the pink tournament that we can open up our product, and I proceed to do so.
I never really believed in Karma, but apparently someone or something, or maybe just blind ass luck thought it apporpriate to award my 4 hours of being lost with a tournament pack containing a Gilded Lotus, a Glimmervoid, and a foil Chrome Mox. I opened up my 1st booster, and it contains a Tooth and Claw. Nice this card should be awesome in sealed, and I open up my 2nd pack which contains a Leveler(hey they can't all be pearls) I proceed to make a blue/green deck. I had some pretty nice equipment and the green had a viridian shaman, deconstruct, and my blue was nice enough to equip me with 2 annuls.
I sit down against my first opponent: Jon(for some reason I always tend to get the grunge/ oth guys, but thats okay by me as they always tend to be extremely nice and friendly) Jon wins the cut and chooses to draw. I slap down a spiffy looking Mirrodin Forest and pass to him. He does likewise. Eventually My Icy and Equipped Yotian Soldiers aren't enough to stop Jon's Loxodon Warhammer from making massive differences in our life totals.
The Second game was a little more in my Favor. I've been beating Jon's grill piece with assorted fliers to the tune of 15 life. A good mix of Burn and Artifact Removal stops me from delivering the final blow. By this time, my resources are depleated and topdecking lands didn't help either. Jon wins this game as well. Both games we're extremely good, so I had no complaints. I wished Jon good luck and went out to purchase one of those sweet Mirrodin shirts for about $15
I get distracted talking to someone, and never heard the call for the 2nd pairings. So I arrive just in time for the Judge to declare my opponent the winner of our match. eh oh well I ask him if he'd like to play anyway. So we sit down and proceed. He wins the first game pretty quickly, as cool as my gilded lotus is, it can't really stop massive beats all by itself. The second game is much different, 7/10 tramplin' spirit-linked bottle gnomes win me the game handily. the 3rd game was extremely close, but I manage to edge out the win with a Neurok Spy.
All in all I had a great time, and I really like Mirrodin. I'm definetly going to buy a fair amount of this set(unfortunately I didn't see a single person with a glissa to trade for, but hey it'll more fun to crack one open myself anyway)
