Hi,

I'm trying to put together a list of cards that are must have's.

What I mean are cards like "Birds of Paradise".
Card that are most used.
Cards that are automatic "four in a deck".

Must have's.

Please list them bellow.
Thanks.

These are my critter and non-critter picks for most likely to run for in any deck of that color. They may not be the "best," but are the most universally useful en masse.

Red
Lightning Bolt
Viashino Cutthroat (Woulda said Fireslinger, but I LOVE these guys!)

White
Swords to Plowshares
Mother of Runes

Black
Expunge (Cycling is some good with limited-use cards)
Ravenous Rats

Green
Rancor
Birds of Paridise

Blue
Counterspell
Cloud of Færies (Again, Cycling and they're free)

Artifact
Cursed Scroll
Rackling

Land
City of Brass
Treetop Village (Gotta love hearing them squeal, "Someone Pillage that Village!")

These are MUST-HAVE cards, not "sometimes going to use them cards" (like the 2 of something cards, Mundungu, no offense).

And are you going to use 4 Stroke of Genius' in almost every blue deck?

Here, off the top of my head:

Swords to Plowshares
Lightning Bolt
Rancor
Counterspell
Diabolic Edict

At least one of the Restricted cards in Type I

As many Duals as you can get :)

Spidey : no offense taken.
However I wanted to make a point that the "must have" is not necesserally "needs four of".

In white, the most common archetype is WW, so I believe the staples of WW must be added. Furthermore those are uncommons and easy to get.

My interpretation of the question was "must have" in terms of what you should seek out for optimum play now and in the future and hence will stand behind my list. Up to Griffith to interpret it.

My list of "Must haves" is actually constitued of my non-trade rare binder with about a hundred cards plus my want list (another 30 or so).

As far as the definition :
"Card that are most used.
Cards that are automatic "four in a deck". "

that all depends what you play. I am not a firm believer of the four of rule.
There are the obvious power cards.

I would recommend to read the old Inquest with the top 100 Magic cards. That was pretty much on target.

No pure Blue players here, I guess. I'll have to help out in that regard.

Ahem.

MANA DRAIN.
FORCE OF WILL. (superguy mentioned this, but it wasn't so expensive when I first laid my hands on them)

There. That wasn't so hard, now was it?

There are others, but most of 'em are restricted. Time Spiral, Time Walk and Ancestral Recall are the three best.

As for black, well, I can think of only 2 cards I would always put 4 of in a deck.

HYPNOTIC SPECTER.
HYMN TO TOURACH.

Gotta love the Hymn. Gotta hate the Hymn. Hymn mucho evil. Duress almost as mucho evil, but not quite. ;)

I have to say I pretty much agree with everything Gizmo said. And people, the original post was for "essential cards", meaning you HAVE to own them for building 95% of your decks. So I don't think Radiant, Archangel or Viashino Cutthroat qualify.

Also, Gizmo said there are no good black spells in T2. Well, what he meant was there are no good black spells in tournament-playing T2. In casual play, these are must-haves IMHO:

Dark Ritual

err... that's about it!

Nah, you need some removal. I like Diabolic Edict but you can go with Terror. And like PJ said, Hymns or Hippies should be at least a strong consideration, if not not "must-haves" (maybe "strongly recommended" :))

?! Viashino Cutthroat does too apply!

The only cards you MUST HAVE for 95% of all decks are the basic lands. That's it. Nothing else is truly indespensable.

Well, yeah, if you're doing ALL decks. But certain cards seem to appear in a lot of deck lists (if you're going at least three color (and maybe even two) and you have green, you're going to want BoPs). And then as Mundungu mentioned, if you want to get even more specific by color, there are certain cards you want. I think thats what we're talking about here.

Don't forget Gerrard's Command. It's really nice, especially with Armadillio Cloak.

Ok 99% of these decks have these cards.

Blue-Counterspell(perhaps the greatest card ever printed)

Black-Dark Ritual(prolly 100% on this one)

Red-Shock/Seal of Fire(Lightning Bolt were it's legal)

Green-Llanowar Elves(Birds left out in mono)

White-Disenchant(in sideboard I suppose)

Look at the cards I named and think to yourself how often you started making a deck and Dark Ritual isn't even a question you start by making a 56 card deck and than adding 4 Ritz. The same is true for all the others too(except for Disenchant, I don't know, I just couldn't think of a must for white)

Tell me how right I am.......Please.
