Music-type database/program?

I'm not sure exactly what I'm asking for, but does anyone know of a free program or database that can contain scanned pages of sheet music and can have keywords attached to them, so if you do a search on a keyword, you'll get said sheets associated with that keyword?

if there is such a thing, I suppose Ransac would know of it. I've never heared of anything capable of doing something like that, but someone probably made it :)

Not sure about free. Songbase is a good one. There are several others out there. One of the best ways to do a search for this is to look for programs used in churchs. Songbase is what my church uses as a database/video presenter. It also allows you to edit your chords, and will automatically convert a song if you change the key. It can search for a song by title, or by lyrics. Not sure if that is what you are looking for or not.

If you're looking for sheet music already scanned, then SheetMusicPlus.com has what you're looking for, though it's not free. It's not a program, but it'll find you the music.

The problem you'll be facing is online/international copyright laws that prevents music that isn't Public Domain (composer has been dead for at least 75 years OR the composer willingly allows the music to be free access) from being freely accessible to the public. The only free music I've been able to find with consistency are church arrangements, opera scores (FULL opera scores for free online :D), struggling artists and some guitar music here and there.

If you're looking for a music-scanning program, there is no better program than SmartScore. In addition to scanning music and doing what you need on THAT end, if you happen to have the Finale music writing program, you can scan music with Smart Score and it will be automatically transferred into an editable Finale File. Smart Score used to have a free trial/demo version, but in my brief searching, I have not been able to find it.

I hope I have helped!

I was thinking Ransac or KJ would be the best bets of knowing... but just in case there was someone else out there :)

I'll check out Songbase.

Edited because Ransac posted at the same time...

Actually, I'm not looking for already scanned music, I want to either scan the sheets myself and enter them in or have the program scan them in, like that second program you mentioned. It's not really music-sheet music, it's dance scores/notations-sheet music. So I'm not looking to change anything (although that may be helpful in the future). This is old stuff, like from the 17th century to early 20th century, so copyright stuff shouldn't be a problem.

One of the things about songbase, is that the sheet music is actually only in guitar chords. If you are looking for piano music, or the full composition, then I have no idea.

No no, I'm not *looking* for music, I have the music myself and can scan it. I just need a database to store it in with the keyword capability.

Ok, songbase will not work for ya then....cant you scan it with a pdf editor? Then you could search for keywords, using each page as a song sheet?

Seems to me, then, that Adobe would be the best free answer.

Smart Score can do what you're talking about (including automatically identifying/recognizing words in the scanned document. But, like I said, it ain't free and I can't find the demo.

What about creating your own Wiki for it? Isn't Wiki code available? You could assign your keywords, and add the scores as attachments... If you have samples of the music, you could even attach them... Or video and photos... The possibilities are nearly endless...

Well, I'm not familiar with wiki and I wanted to keep it as simple as possible... but it's an option, thanks.

It looks fairly simple and I found there are several sources of Free Software for it...

Good Luck w/ your project!
