Hello! It's a new month, and a new political.
This month, we have 2(!) topics.
For the main issue, seeing as Bush might become the next president, "What do you think about the U.S. Military policy", and all items that are related.

For our side issue, as I had promised Ademis, I will hold a mini-discussion about Canadian canadites for election. I would like only Canadians to participate in that debate, as I doubt any U.S. resident would care, but if you have anything interesting to add, by all means do so.

I will participate in the main discussion, but I will Ademis will most likely be hosting the side issue.

Main issue: "What's your opinion about the U.S. military; policy, spending,etc.

Side Issue: Canadian election canadites.

As always, I look forward to these debates.

Not being Canadian, I sadly have no input there.

Military policy for me is simple: build it, then don't use it. A strong military is an excellent bargaining chip in your corner, if for no reason other than to flaunt it about as a threat. Of course, we should never be afraid to use it if need be to defend ourselves or our interests.

Fool, you don't make allies by swinging around a big stick. An even bigger malitai is just wrong.

Bush sucks, plain and simple.

We allready have the most powerfull army in the world, and alliances in many other countries. We don't need more wacking sticks.

Lets see, topic #1:

What do I think of the US military policy?
Not being a resident American I can't say I have an honest opinion about it. But as far as it goes the USA has the largest and most advanced military force on the face of the planet. Does it really need anything else? I don't think so as long as its maintaining its par then there really isn't any reason to super power it anymore.
The US is also allied with almost every other major military super power in the world except China and and some parts of the middle east.
I believe China is the only country in the world with a larger airforce, but its not nearly as well equipped or trained.

Topic #2:

Yay, I'm Canadian!
Anyways, we have 3 major parties up here that are really worth listening to right now.
The NDP, the Liberals (in power now), and the new Canadian Alliance party. Also its important to note, that in Canada, to a degree, you are voting for the party, not just the candidate.
To analize them one at a time.

The NDP (New Democrats Party): They gave us the GST, (a really crappy tax for those of you not Canadian), and they pretty much screwed up the country when they were last in power. They are the least popular party by a light year.

The Liberals: In control now with Jean Cretien as Prime Minister. They've done a respectable job of running things and have managed to turn the heavy economic downfall around so that at least we aren't free falling anymore. However they haven't kept a campaign promise they made last time they ran which was the abolish the GST. Some people don't like this, plus we have 3 prairie provinces full of farmers taht are pissed cause the feds haven't been able to or have been unwilling to help with the agricultural crisis they're suffering.

The Canadian Alliance: New kids on the block. They have a young idealistic party leader and alot of experienced people who used to be in other parties. They're drawback is that they are new and are formed from not only other smaller political groups, but from politicians from other groups as well, thus they suffer from alot of internal bickering and its not known if they can really get anything done if it comes down to game time.

Right now from what I understand its basically a competition between the Liberals and the Canadian Alliance. Which means the candidates are Jean Cretien and Stockwell Day, I think...(I don't remember for sure).
At this time with insufficient research I'd have to go with Cretien and the Liberals just because they haven't been doing such a bad job so far and at least I know Cretien is experienced.

I'm not Canadian so no thoughts there.

Military: It depends what world role you think the US ought to take and whether the US should become more isolationist. Policeman? The US will need some type of fast reponse military (maybe not the conventional one it has now) and the spending and upkeep to maintain it. Probably the idea of fighting two fronts at once, though, can go.

You never can be too sure. After all the stuff Clinton did (policies and "other"), I'm surprised the rest of the world still respects us at all.
