Although I don't play, I really like the news so far...
The new "creative" thing really got my thoughts flowing - what is meant by "customizable" cards? There are talks about bringing Kicker back in an abusive fashion, but I think it's too early to bring back a mechanic that hasn’t been absent for that long. Some talk about Buy Back coming back, but that's not "creative." It's just good and...repetitive. I don’t see it.
What my thoughts lead me about the new "creative" and "customizable" element in the cards is to an idea I believe explored in other card games - Yu Gi Oh, I think is one of them. They already copied the Morph theme, which is essential fundamentally a Yu Gi Oh element, as I have heard.
Now, the customizable, and thus creative cards, could be something like - they give you a creature, for example, which can (as it comes into play? During upkeep? As an ability?) recruit certain specified equipment artifact for its use. Example:
Cyberborg Vampire (3BB)
Creature - Vampire
Flying
As Cyberborg Vampire comes to play, search your library for a Vampiric Whip, Syphon Claws, or Spirit Gear card and put it in your hand, then shuffle your library.
3/3
Vampiric Whip (3)
Equipment Artifact
Equipped creature gains “Tap: this creature deals an amount of damage equal to half of its power rounded down, to target creature. You gain that much life."
Syphon Claws (4)
Equipment Artifact
Equipped Creature gains +1/+0 and “Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a creature or player, you gain that much life.”
Revival Gear (5)
Equipment Artifact
Equipped creature gains +1/+1 and “Whenever equipped creature is destroyed, it regenerates.”
…
Note: these equipments can be used by any creature, but only specific creatures can call for them. Or maybe the equipments will specify which creature class it can be used on – for instance: the example card above, Vampiric Whip, can read so that it may only be used on Vampire and Horror creatures, and so on. And you have to take into consideration the many possibilities – they could take a completely different route – they could make the creature itself able to recruit the equipment of its choice whenever desired by tapping, paying, or sacrificing for it. They could have the player able to tap the creature on his or her upkeep to search his or her library for some specified equipment cards. I can see it now: some powerful or special creatures, like Legends, can call for any equipment. In any case, I have a big feeling that they will rely one way or another on creature-equipment-recruiting method.
To have an new card type as equipment just for the sake that it is an artifact as opposed to an actual enchant-creature card is unnecessary, and anyone with quarter a brain can see the superficiality behind the decision for such a creation. But...I venture to say that there is more to equipment than meets the eye. Perhaps each and every equipment card to ever be printed will be recruitable by some number of creatures, so every equipment is essentially a "counterpart," and not just merely a variation on enchant-creature cards. The reason for making them artifacts and not just recruitable enchant-creature cards is to add an additional element of flexibility - any creature may use these weapons, shields, and the whole inventory of gears...but only few may abuse them.
The main problem in these assertions of mine is that the set would have to have a creature-focus - we can't have equipment cards floating around without enough creatures, so the equipment/creature ratio should be balanced enough...which, if done correctly, would not leave room for many other spells, which, again, may be a good arrow towards the fact that some good spells are coming back, like Terror and Annul, and…um…Shatter. It makes some sense: they're not going to have a lot of spells, so they're bringing back the valuable ones. And, actually, now that I think about it, they might indeed bring back Buy Back for this set - the lack of spells will create a need for reusable instants and sorceries.
Thoughts, ideas, speculations…all welcome…
