Not sure, maybe they're evolving. One change is that they'll only affect Slivers you control and not everyone's.

I think the official lore explanation is something to do with these slivers having mutated, adapted, evolved, or whatever. I thought it might have been something to do with changing styles, but I took a look at the original slivers and remembered the totally different artistic styles that illustrators were using back then (for example, Ron Spencer in contrast to Scott Kirschner). And slivers in later sets, despite stylistic differences, retain the key morphological characteristics of the Rath Cycle slivers. These new slivers, even the ones that aren't obviously humanoid, all seem rather mammalian compared to their predecessors. So I'm guessing that the mutation/adaptation/evolution/magic was in that direction for some reason. If they haven't already, WotC will probably release some awful book in which you can find more answers.
