Hey, I can beat you, I have a playgroup of ONE, including myself! ;)

Seriously, that's pretty much why I've stopped playing. Although I just got Apprentice and Pirchat and am looking forward to playing Griffy.

On the other hand, of your three characterizations you made about Mr. Forsythe, I can only vaguely agree about him being a good player and that just from word of mouth here and never playing him. Good writer? So far that's the only article I know that he's written and it didn't particularly strike me as "good". Joy to read? As people as said, his "tone" or manner of writing didn't exactly jibe with me either. As I said above, I could see what he was saying but IMHO, having first-hand experience does not necessarily translate into "being informed".

As you said, I think it was an opinion article but not one particularly suitable for "Dojo front page".

Erik`s experience with multiplayer and casual Magic pretty much mirror my own (and I would imagine every thoer tourney player`s experiences). I would also add that I outgrew my casual play group (we had a mobile pool of about 30 players at University) when I became a good tourney player. I simply found I was beating people too easily because I knew how to play and they didn`t.

*Winning isn`t necessarily fun, but competitive matchups always are.*

The reason many casual players stay away from tourneys, I think, is because their initial experience is of being uncompetitive and losing badly, and that`s just not fun.
