Longetivity of Art

Does anyone think any of the artists for Magic cards will ever, one day, attain the status of people like Normal Rockwell, or maybee even, though less likely, Vincet Van Gogh?

Phil Foglio I've seen do alot of covers for books (the MYTH series by robert asprin, among others)

But nothing classic, I don't think. Unless we scavenge classic art for the cards.

Fantasy art is a rather specialized niche. Granted, probably the art by the ones you mentioned appeal to a certain segment of the population, but fantasy is probably a smaller segment (too bad).

The really "BIG" fantasy artist I know is Boris Valejo (?). He puts out a yearly calender, at least.

Side note: Loved the illustrated Myth books by Foglio. I've only read the first (illustrated; I've read most of the novels). Does anyone know how many Foglio did for the series?

The art on the cards is okay but nothing too exceptional. It's very hard to excel in fantasy since its basically art that has certain criteria and usually does not have innovative mastery that goes along with it. Probably an author or in this case, the people creating magic cards, tell the artists what to create which limits the extent of what the artist can do.
