Laughable at best, Starcity sinks to new lows.

Anyone who's hobby it is to tediously file all my little likes/dislikes should know that starcitygames is my favorite magic site to vigorously degrade and vigorously read :) In SCG defense many of their articles have gotten pretty dang good lately. Granted they're mostly geared towards Type 1, 2 and Extended. But many are well written and let's face it, good magic strategy and thoughtful analysis regardless of format is still useful. Which brings me to the point of this post. Anyone who's visited the site recently will have noticed they've switched to a pay for content format. Which is okey-dokey by me. They're not the Salvation Army and they don't owe anyone a damn thing. They're doing what they do for loot, simple as that. But there are just a few things, which niggle at me.

1. They're suppose to be a website selling cards, with magic based content to lure in customers. Not a content based website hoping to pawn off some cardboard. This distinction is kind of important because reading Darth Jr.'s post leads me to believe they’re leaning towards the content website pawning cards format. Which is probably where they need to go, being that their prices are ridiculously inflated. Anytime the prices of your card inventory mirrors the prices of Scry, something's amiss. You're certainly not peddling your wares in any type of considerable volume.

2. Now I'm completely whipping all this out the bum (big change here huh?) but the online magic community I believe is a relatively small but very devout group. I'd imagine there's only enough room for one pay for content based website out there. And honestly, who's advice would you rather pay for? Zvi Mashpotatowhip and Kai Budde's at Brainburst? Both who are famous for winning at high level magic. Or Jim Ferraiolo and Mike Flores at SCG who are famous for writing about magic. Please, that's like a self-styled fitness buff that works-out and occasionally reads Flex magazine trying to charge you for advice. As opposed to just hiring your own fitness trainer whose job it is to get people in shape. Go back to the water cooler and drool over your musclemen dork.

3. SCG owes it's success as a content provider to Brainburst. Who as a repercussion of their model drove writers and readership SCG's way. When I started reading SCG they were the laughing stock of strategy sites. Now they’re charging for content. They're plenty of usurpers in the midst whose job it is not to peddle cardboard. But to post excellent content and derive revenues from advertisements and store references. I can easily imagine Play or Draw rubbing their hands cackling gleefully at this opportunity so generously given to them by SCGs.

Right now is SCG’s articles worth a red nickel for their articles? Well I guess it depends on whom you ask. Me? Hell no. If I’m paying for someone’s opinion concerning my favorite hobby, it sure as H.E. double hockey sticks isn’t going to be some hack.

Wow, thanks for the heads up. That is really just...sad. On a plus side, I hope they pay their writers better because of this. (Likely not, though, sadly. I'll bet that big fat guy gets the huge chunk of this new money.)

You're right. This is a retarded move. Brainburst can get away with subscriptions because, well, their guys are good at the game. Star City...their guys are just *entertaining.* Nobody's gonna pay to get a funny read unless it snags them wins like Brainburst is able to say about their stuff.

Morons. Major thumbs down to SCG.

SCG runs a business, so I understand their motives. I check their site daily, but now I'm sure if it will be worth it. I liked the strategy articles (my only link to competitive magic ), but paying for it? No way.

About their quality: the tournament theory articles are great, but in the multiplayer/casual department I find SCG lacking. Abe Sargent has written some good stuff, but his 'deck a day' articles are a bit short. Adam Grydehoj did some articles about old expansions. The were nice, but could have been a lot more interesting.

Don't get me started on the SCG forums. CPA has a lot more activity (compared to their casual/mp threads).

Out of curiosity, how many "regulars" or active members would you say hang out on their casual/MP threads?

No idea, but the replies are slow when I posted there.
If I'm correct it still is.

Hmmm...now, let me get this straight: SCG is charging people for the "priviledge" of reading their articles? Now, I remember when Gamespot went to that format. I started reading my videogame articles on other (FREE!) sites and felt I was getting the same quality. Sure, I didn't get all their "exclusives", but I still found some other good content out there...

...makes you think, doesn't it?

-Ferret

"I wonder if that article I wrote for Gamespot in '98 would cost money to view?"

Well, let's see. There;s two options...

1. people dont read them, Starcity look silly and make them free again.

2. people read them, Starcity make money

Worth a try from their point of view, isn't it?

Looks like this new message board format dorked your signature. As for your question. I've browsed their forums, but their infested with every known variant of lamer, angst ridden teen, and general lifeless loser. I wouldn't post there with your keyboard and Notepad typing (kee kee, pretty good huh).

Gizmo

Absolutely, it's their website and business. If they can turn a profit selling air more power to them. I just perceive them as trying to ride the coattails of Flores and Eisel, if they pull it off huzzah!

 That sucks. I used to like reading some (albeit not many) of the articles on SSG. I don't play competitively but I like reading tourney reports for type 1. :( I miss the days of the Dojo. :(

Wow, I agree with pretty much your whole statement. Not a frequent reader, and what I do read would never make me want to post.

Should I slap John around to write a news item article about this? He hasn't been around but I can coax him back with either a mauling, or candy. Whichever is easier (and I don't have any candy on hand, but my dogs are hungry).

The Dojo went under because of the elitism behind it. Yeah, it got out of control time-wise and bandwidth-wise, but there's ways to handle it. Advertisements come to mind. But no, they turned it into this image-overloaded (one way to destroy your bandwidth) piece of elitist crap that no one wanted to read (one way to kill your readership and ad funding). Congrats to SCG, they seem to be headed in the same retarded direction.*

*Retarded, a word The Ferrett hates. To The Ferrett: You're retarded! If anybody saw the way he called the readership nothing better than leeches, well, man...forget having respect for him anymore.

The Dojo was a good site. I remember reading it every day for couple years before they added their forums (which, of course, spawned the CPA!) Before Frank sold out to Psylum they were a great place w/ articles that were fun to read (well, until Blue Winter) and was the place where articles by Wakefield and Flores could make you laugh about how silly the game can be (My fav article by Flores was "Magic on Crack" which was a review of Exodus' black cards) and it was nice.

Then they became a corporate tool for Psylum and started sponsoring tournaments and all of a sudden became the place to learn the latest "tech" and find out about the "metagame" and all those other buzzwords that I dispise.

As for "The Ferrett":

1. He needs to learn to spell! There's only one "t". Note to self - send him a dictionary.

2. I hate it when I'm on MTGO and people ask if I'm him...grrr....

He has two Ts because he is a RETARD. 'nuf said on that.

The guy used to be like Rizzo, a psychotic rebel you could really enjoy reading. Now...he's gone money-hungry puppet to that huge fat guy who owns SCG. Sad. Really, really sad.

Who... runs the website and servers, which were getting overloaded by hits.

The casual articles are free, still, so I've just got a sinking feeling. At least they've got good content avaible for free(such as Rakso's pieces); Brainburst locked up anything that wasn't crap...

...now if I could only get someone to bootleg those, or a job...

You could get a job being an Orgg! Dress up like the mascot and visit children's birthday parties. Smash stuff and break presents. Even smash the cake into the kid's face. It'd be a laugh riot!

...for kids who've behaved badly.

Wow, Zvi is writing for SCGs. That's certainly a turn in the right direction. Honestly..hee hee... they get free more premier writers and I'd seriously consider purchasing a subscription.
