Just played a magic tournament

It's been a while but I might be catching the bug again. There's a new shop opened up near me that has late night tournaments I can get to after work and it's luring me in. I haven't played since Nationals 2002, but tonight I took part in a Creature Feature tournament (pick a creature type, you can play 4 of creatures of that type, everything else is highlander) and really enjoyed getting the chance to bust out some of my cool old stuff.

Been looking to play casually for a few months now, not really got the willpower to play tournaments for serious prizes any more because I'm a sore loser. This could be my way back in. Anyway, it should all add up to me being around a lot more again.

FYI, I played...

Hydroblast From The Past

Lost to my mate Neil, playing a variant of the Goblin deck he played at Worlds a couple of months ago... it went absolutely nuts with Goblin Lackey around to run his Siege Gangs and Warchiefs. Other than that I beat a really bad Dragon deck, won a really tight match against a U/W Knight deck, and then smashed down a Merfolk deck - Aether Flash was the mad tech of the day, winning me every game it was played in. Was fun though, it was a laugh to play as a deck.

You're new aren't you...

Ok, pick a creature type (ie. Goblins) you can play 4 of any Goblins you want (ie. 4 Fanatic, 4 Lackey, 4 Sparksmith etc etc) but anything else has to be highlander (ie. there can be only one). The tournament was Vintage so all sets were legal, hence me playing powerful old spells.

Clearer?

Yeah, that makes sense. I was just thrown off by the fact that your deck wasn't one that used multiples of multiple creatures (leading me to believe that perhaps it was highlander except for one creature or something).

I would run Thawing Glaciers in that build. Force of Will, Powder Keg, Standstill, Chain Lightning, and Boomerang definitely have potential for inclusion too. Oh, and some Onslaught fetchlands if available (they seem kinda hard to come by--I only have one, but at least it is Polluted Delta).

What am I new to?

Well I ran Snakes to abuse Ophidian. I had a U/G Snake deck with 4 Boa, 4 OPhidian, 4 Mystic Snake and then a bunch of other G/U tempo aggressive spells, but it struck me that simply playing loads of card advantage spells would be the easiest way to beat a bunch of crappy players in a local tournament. My other plan was CounterRebels, but testing that reminded me just how bobbins that whole expansion was and I think I would have shot myself in the head if I had to spend an evening recurring Defiant Vanguards. This deck was funnier.

If I had Glaciers they would have been included - the deck was missing Thawing Glaciers, Soldevi Excavations, and Reflecting Pool to help the land out. The other stuff I didn't want, taking lands out of the deck doesnt help you draw more lands later - I don't want to think land out of my deck because I need to keep drawing it (well, Glaciers is obviously an exception). The mana was my big worry, but my mate came through for me at the last minute with the Mirrodin's Core and Caldera Lake to help me out. I managed, anyway - the only game my mana cost me was simply down to getting 3 lands in my top 19 cards.

The cards you listed were all good, but unavailable. Except for Boomerang, which is marginal in this deck. I would have liked to play Pyrite and Aether Spellbombs as well, but not having played for two years I didnt have them. Hammer Of Bogeyman would maybe have been nice as well, but then the RRR recur cost was hard to find for the Phoenix, and Fireball was effective at killing people with big shots to the dome.

And you're new to the CPA.

Yeah, I was going to suggest Hammer, but then came to the same conclusion you did...

That's too bad about not having Force of Will. They are annoying to get these days, it seems...

I guess I'm sorta new. I've been here since, um, January.

I played goblins at this tournament, luckily Dave (Gizmo) forgot to bring his flunkies and fanatics so i played keeper of kookus and lackey's instead. For the record, Lackey is of the chart, it is the absolute nuts, not many people could deal with a turn 2 siege-gang commander and his little friends. I went on to win because the other goblin deck player didnt own enough sharpshooters to draw them all the time :). My deck was efficient but nowhere near as much fun as Gizmo's, he was having a ball.

Goblins could be really annoying in this format, since you can use four of so many good creatures...

Lackey is just a little broken...

but since he's red he's okay...:D

What would be cool is changing the lackey's type in the ability to a different creature type - like legend, or dragon...:D

Welcome back,.....its been awhile.

The tournament sounds like it was a good time.

Most of the crew from our Time have moved on to other things, I think. Some of them still post from time to time. Some of us play Magic Online. Its pretty fun.

anyway, welcome back to the CPA and Magic.

:D
