Just a rant

Last night I played physical magic. Got out of class early and had my angel deck on me just in case. I went to a different store then normal. there were only 4 or 5 other players there. sat down to play.

We were playing type 1 casual decks. Now my angel deck is a type 1.5 highlander style theme deck. It can be harsh if the draw is right but it is usually just a fun deck. My opponent ended up playing a combo tolarian academy deck. it was terrible but I don't have any counters or disruption and I didn't get a fast enough start. So needless to say I get to set through 10 minutes while he tries to go off. Now i don't mind combo decks as long as the person who is running it has a clue. well after about 10 minutes the 75 pt braingeyser came and it was at last over.

Then he brings out another deck. It was an elf deck with wellwishers. this game ended in a draw because I couldn't get rid of the wellwishers and he couldn't get rid of worship or creatures.
Needless to say not the best of times. oh well I guess I will stick with Online. Just a Rant

In my opinion combo decks like academy are not casual. They are just no fun to play against. If he didn’t know what he was doing it’s even worse.

An elf deck without any enchantment removal? I always play Elvish Lyrist in my elf deck. ;-)

Casual Magic? Does that even exist anymore?

Let me continue your rant. I enjoy building decks. I enjoy building good decks. I have a full time job, and a family. I have a life. I don't have time to tune my decks to optimal performance.

I enjoy a good game of casual magic and I prefer that the deck I'm playing against is a decent deck because it allows for a lot of good play interaction and (hopefully) a close game.

I do not enjoy sitting across from someone who doesn't have a clue playing a bad deck because there is no challenge.

But, what I enjoy even less is sitting across from a player who is a decent player, but copied the current unbeatable tech from the internet.

To me, casual play is playing against another player who builds decent decks and knows how to play them.

Fun decks that barely have a prayer of winning are also fun if they can make for an interesting game (no one wants to play against fish).

But, no one wants to be a fish, either. Its not a casual game unless it is a fun deck. You want to test your latest tech on my decks, fine, let's do it. But that's not a casual game and don't tell me it is.

My rant is that it seems that no one plays casual anymore. Period.

I think if you play with friends you can easily play casual games with fun decks.
When you see one deck is boring/too powerful, you simply switch the decks.

It's much harder to do with strangers though, I prefer to play limited with them (it's not really casual, but it's surely more fun than playing vs. a bad player playing Academy*).
Multiplayer also tends to drive out idiotic decks and players, but it's hard to get a multiplayer game going.

About your second game, couldn't you simply determine who has more cards in his library and declare him the winner :D

The advantage of MTGO is that with so many ppl on there, there have to be some who play in a similar casual style like you, though I'd guess they aren't that easy to find.

*I'm sure that is what Magic players would have to do in hell

So all Magic players will spend eternity playing against bad players with Academy decks? Yikes!

I'm still not a huge fan of MTGO. I like the feeling of holding actual cardboard in my hand and I like manually adjusting my life counter.

Well, there's nothing better than sitting across three or four of your closest friends and making random moves that annoy other people and hearing things like "Your mother's dealing 17 damage!" or "where the heck did that play come from?"

This is what MTG is about...

Unfortunately, sometimes we grow apart from our playing groups, but we still want to play. I want to get MTGO - as soon as I can afford it so I can play again w/ people. There's nothing wrong w/ fellow CPA members getting together to play against each other. If you're tired of playing against the "combo kings" at your local shops, MTGO can be your best friend...

Actually, you yell at an Adept.

And Ferret, MTG:O is free for download... but you don't get any cards to start off with...

And somtimes they'll ignore your messages even after you threaten to stay off until they answer you....

Ask Lotus Mox. I havn't been on there since I met him... and he can tell you why.

You know what casual Magic is? Two nights ago I saw a player use a 14-point Outmaneuver in his Kookus deck to deal lethal damage to a player using an artifact deck that was coming over for the kill with 3 Beast of Burdens, 2 Excavators, and some other random stuff. An Outmaneuver! And it worked!

The funny thing is, the artifact player was only at 14 because 3 turns before he had used Helm of Possession to steal the other guys' Kookus and had taken damage on the past 2 upkeeps. It was one of the funniest games I've ever seen.

Yes, just like real Magic.

Especially if they are without merit.

Well, that does explain a lot.

Knowing how technology works - I want cardboard in my hands... I can always use them for something if Magic goes under... They won't reimburse my money if their back-ups lost everything!!!

You know, this is the same thoughts I had when that other online CCG came ou (forget the name - but no one seems to mention it any more). A lot of my friends were really into it. I asked them what would happen if they lost their info, but they told me that they kept copies on their hard drives - so what happens if your hard drives crash? I'm not going to use up a few dozen zip disks for card collection - that's what my two dozen binders are for!

I think I know what you're talking about although I forget the name of it also. The thing is, usually companies are better at backing up data than the user, so I'd trust them more than the players.

And with real cards, you can have food on them, greasy fingers, crappy playing surfaces, toddler's mouths... same thing, just different circumstances :) But there's no backup here...

Ahhhh.... the dangers of child saliva on Magic Cards - Must keep Blues Clues and Powerpuff girls on TV to keep the child occupied...

Note to self - Regularly check diaper of child to ensure curious hands don't paint brown smears on your walls...;)

As for cards - I think it's just the physical concept, it's mine - and no hacker can have it... As for the common thief... (The Widowmaker2000(TM) smiles menacingly!!!):D

From what I remember, the first online card game's ads looked like this, and if you sent a booster of cards from another game, you got three of their's free...

Well, if you're worried about how your cards will turn out, you can always do what the tourney guys do and get a bunch of card condoms - I mean card protectors to keep them safe.

-Ferret

"...or keep the good ones in protectors and use lots of proxies..."
