Just a little update

It's good to be back. Several months ago my modem went 'wacky' and it's taken me all this time to get back online.

Here's what's been happenin' lately:

Blue Star Games, a local gaming store near my place of work, has been doing well. I run magic events on friday nights and we call it: "Friday Magic Events" since FNM is probably trademarked and I'm sure the owner doesn't want to mislead anyone.

This past Friday we ran a Ninth Edition draft. It was a double elimination format and I ended up second. The prizes were eight 9E packs for 1st and four for 2nd. I was running green/black with Silklash Spider leading the charge. I had little to no removal as Dark banishing was nowhere to be found and I had to take Consume Spirit, which is now an uncommon. It sucks in a two color deck.

Anyway, since the beginning of June we mostly run "Chaos Magic" games with a $2 buy-in and winner gets the whole pot in 'store credit', not too bad. Our drafts are $13 which is par for course in the area and the prizes are as well as can be expected. One week we had a double event; Emperor ($2 each player) and Assasin ($2 each player). Neither worked out so well so we bagged those type of events for now. Two weeks ago we had an honest to goodness Standard Tounament (type II). There were 10 players and we did a 16 bracket single elimination format. Again, I came in second with a UG Crystal Witness deck (hardly a Teir 2 deck at best) and the winner was playing Goblins ala' Hard Core style. As it turned out he and I were the only two tournament minded players. This event was really meant to give the players at the store a brief look into a somewhat organized tournament event. Most of the players have never played in sanctioned events or even have DCI numbers. It was kinda cool to see all of the ORIGINAL concoxtions that made their way into the players decks. I wish I could even remember one deck but I didn't take notes. It was hard trying to sideboard against most of the decks since they weren't copies or near copies of any deck but most of them were well aware of mine  !

As for GASP (Gaming Association of Southwestern Pennsylvania), I wrote a June report and will be posting it sometime this week. In brief, I'm the 'point-leader' but I'll be missing August's game and Kevin (formerly Kevin the Goblin King) is on my heels. Things are going well for the MML (Multiplayer Magic League).

Origins in Columbus, OH:
I went. I worked for Professional Events Services (PES) and we were in charge of the UDE events........you know, Marvel VS and Yu-Gi-Oh! Anyway, myself and three other friends spent our entire time in the CCG Hall not judging, but organizing product, setting up tournament tables and such. It was HARD WORK!!!! My friends and I got a chance to play a few games after one of our 12 hour shifts, we played in a Settlers of Catan tournament and visited Looney Lab Games upstairs and I won a game called, "Are You a Werewolf?" It was so cool! The exhibit hall was great and you would think with all of the games offered there I would get one? Nope. I bought a CD by Midnight Syndicate the was music to play D & D with. Yup, backround music. OY! Okay, I did buy Apples to Apples (Junior version) for my family, it's a load of fun.

I have approximately 21 days of summer left and I can't wait 'till school starts again. I am a person of habit and when summer comes along I'm in a state of confusion, I stop exercising, I gain weight and I seriously get bored, a lot.

It's good to be back!

it seems like all of us are resurging right now... hopefully our numbers will amass and Magic will become the national sport...

Hey, good to hear what's going on. I was wondering what happened to July's GASP report and am sorry to hear there won't be an August one (unless one of your guys takes notes and sends it to you).

If Apples to Apples becomes stale, you might try Cheapass Games's The Big Idea. Similar, but with slightly more strategy.

Thanks. I'm only vaguely familiar with Cheapass Games but I'll check it out. As for A2A Junior Edition, it's a blast to play with my wife and two daughters (ages 9 & 6) :D
