Incentives for Czech blood donors

People in the Czech Republic are being offered two free pints of beer if they become blood donors.
They're also being offered a year's subscription to a beer magazine.
A special bus will take donors to hospital during the five-day St. Wenceslas Beer Festival that starts in Prague on Thursday.
Local health authorities expect 'massive' interest in the donor scheme, says local media.
A recent survey by world brewers' associations showed people in the Czech Republic drink an average of 162 litres of beer per year.

Heh...

162 litres doesn't seem like much though...

Edit: Wait a minute. This water bottle I'm holding is half a litre. 162 litres of beer for the ENTIRE country of over 10 million people over the course of a year? So if only a half a million of them drink any beer, that's still only 324 bottles of beer for all of them for the whole year. That can't be right...

Well, you have to realize it was a survey done by the world brewers association, so they might have only surveyed people who are drinking already and extrapolated that to the whole country, whether that was correct or not. You just need to know more about the survey to find out.

You're saying the amount seems too small for the entire nation, right? And I'm saying that the survey was done on a small selection of people, but they "extrapolated" or extended it to say it was the entire nation.

In other words, they took a survey of 1000 people or so, got the average of 162 liters, and said "ooo, the entire nation drinks an average of 162 liters".

True, but what else are you to gather from when it says "people"? Especially since Oversoul seems to be taking that way when he says "all of them".

When they say "people in the Czech Republic" that would normally be interpreted to mean the average amount that all of them drink in a given year. If they meant the average of the individual, then it needs to be worded differently to be interpreted that way generally...

Not sure if that's directed at me or train, but I'll guess train as it seems to echo my sentiments... :)

I guess when they take a survey...they should either multiply it out so that you get a national avg., or word it better....cause I am sure one college campus (and a small one at that) could manage 162 litres in a year

I actually took that to mean they EACH drink an average of 162 litres of beer per year...

I hope they didn't include underage people in that number, or the per adult figures would be HUGE...

but...you gotta remember their legal age is probably no higher than 18...Germany's is 16....Most of Europe as a whole averages around 18 I'm sure....

so if they continue to exchange beer for blood - wouldn't that up the averages?...
