In the backlogs of the net...the beginning of the CPA

I was working on recovering some of my old Mad Dog Rants, and looking through the old archives of Dojo files at Archive.org. I found something very interesting I wanted to share:

That in itself is a very interesting article, but there's a lot more to look at within that snapshot of the Dojo. Things in Magic had already been changing, but it was around that time that things cemented into what we know as Magic today. Here's the issues section of that Dojo:

It sure brings back a lot of memories. *sniff* Man, I remember the good old days of the Dojo, when it covered casual and humor, too. Now it seems all sites offer anymore is just strategy. That's why I'm glad there's a place like the CPA for casual players.

EDIT~ Archive.org seems to have been hit by hackers. Their archives weren't working for the past few days. Now, they lead to porn sites rather than archives. So, I got rid of the URLs.

For some reason all the "wayback" features of the Archive.org site are useless. I guess they're doing some fixes or something. :/

It turns out that I had saved some of the CPA files I saw. Two of them, unfortunately not the first of the three files that was the announcement. Well, I've re-posted them on my own website:

Have a look-see if you want to see some of the first talk of the CPA.

Tony Scott, aka Baron Sengir, is the main guy that organized things, and got us together. He and Mike Sullivan, aka Ed Sullivan, are the ones most responsible for the formation of the CPA.

Spiderman is a guy that we used to argue with a lot on the old Dojo, who joined up a few months after this site was up and running, and has stayed with us for a long time now. Due to his dedication (and the fact that he was on all the time anyway...:p ) we asked him to become an Admin/Moderator, a position he accepted when the site was a little over a year old.

We're sure glad he did...:D

And if you're looking for some of the best fights that heralded the creation of this place, check out the verbal war that took place between us and Kevin Chen on the Dojo back around November of '99.

It was a classic...;)

Thanks for the info!

Ah, I will have to edit that asap then.

As soon as archive.org fixes that problem with being hacked, I'll try to look up more stuff on the CPA. It would be cool to have a backlog of the Dojo's discussions about it.

EDIT~ Yes!!!! Archive fixed their problems! Now the old Dojo stuff can be looked at again. :D

I only argued that the creation of the CPA was probably not necessary; I mostly agreed with the original members on other issues (I was a main proponent of 6th rules as I recall and had a smashing "debate" going with some guy who had the handle "goblin something-or-other"... :p

But yeah, that Kevin Chen argument shouldn't be missed :)

Looked around a bit and couldn't find that argument. The Ferret was right in his Thursday article: Archives of stuff are hard to find on the net. Buried better than kitty litter, but just as much of a pain in the arse to go through. ;)

I don't know the layout or how you're finding the links; the one archive site I saw saved pages of the site, so I was able to find the front page of the Dojo and go from there (but I haven't done it recently). If the site you're going to has the same kind of thing and you don't mind spending the time, just check the front page of the Dojo for each week :) Should be a bit after the initial announcement though, of course.

I was checking on Archive.org, and sadly, their archives have a huge gap at right about that time period.
