In praise of Sol Malka

Realizing that this site is dedicated to the promotion, discussion and general advancement of casual play, I would nonetheless like to step outside the mission statement and recognize someone from the world of high-level tournament play.

Atlantans in particular should take great pride that we are home to the current #1 rated Magic player in the world - Sol Malka. While his playing skills alone earned him this honor, what makes Sol even more worthy of praise is that he is a helluva nice guy.

The world of Magic tournament play has more than its share of jerks, scoundrels and others you wouldn't whiz upon if their Loti caught fire, but Sol always conducts himself with dignity and class. Even years ago, when I beat him in a sealed deck event due to him being mana-screwed (I guess it really does happen to everybody), he took the loss with the attitude that "Well, that happens sometimes". He complimented my deck, offered a couple of suggestions, and wished me good luck, all of this without any hint of cynicism or insincerity.

So what now?

Personally, I would like to see Sol become something of an ambassador of Magic to the rest of the world. I understand that he can't enter just any ol' sanctioned event featuring Joe-Bob and the Scrubs, but what about non-sanctioned side events? You know, like being at a pre-release or something, taking on all opponents at $5 a pop, and offering deck advice when he pounds you into the floor.

Of course, Sol's time and agenda are his own, so we'll see if something like this happens.

Anyway, a doff of my CPA cap to Sol, and of course best wishes in the future.

The first time I ever saw Sol Malka's name was when I bought his book, Visions Revealed (a card-by-card analysis of the Visions cardset).

The next time was across the table (and one to the right) at the Tempest prerelease, when he tried to convince me that my opponent could play Cloudchaser Eagle and choose whether to destroy an enchantment.

Ah, those were the days! :)

Conrgrats to Sol Malka, it's been a long time coming.

The first time I actually conversed with Sol was at the Masques Pre-relese.

I asked him, since I was familiar with him and his easy-going ways at Nutral Ground: Atlanta, if all "professionals" were arseholes as my previous claimed to be "professional" opponent was.

He said some of them were.

He then asked to trade with me. I saw his Thrull Champion and gave a Masques Shatterstorm-thing for it.

He's much more familiar with me now, and we chat once-so-often. With his attitude, it's really hard to believe that he's so GOOD!

:{ )

He also gave me the designs for his multiplayer deck(or at least the outlines of it): Aku Djinn, Propaganda, Spike Cannibal late game.

The last dealings I've had with him was giving him a third of an Orange at the Torment Pre-Relese. Sol is cool.

I'll definatly congratulate him next time I see 'em!

I must say that it's pretty cool that Sol has finally gotten to be number 1.

Plus, I have beaten him in two games(not matches, mind you) of magic. That I think is pretty cool(even though I have lost the other 5,452 games to him).
