Today I had to make one of those choices at work, where you have to struggle with yourself and actually ponder what's right and wrong.

Basically, my supervisor was doing some things that I didn't approve of.... not showing proper respect to some of my co-workers. And I had a choice of speaking out against that, and probably hurting my own chances of advancement, etc.. Or not saying anything like a little oinkssy. Of course, theoretically, everyone's quick to yell "I'd speak out! Hell yeah I would!" But when faced with choice like this in real life, I actually had to ponder for about five minutes do I really want to do this.... But I'm proud to say that in the end, I just couldn't stay silent and wrote a message in our log (for everybody to read).

No real point to this post, except that I feel good after doing what I've done

I'm proud of you. Not many people have the guts to stand up like that. Plus, you can't get fired for stating an opinion. If you do, you could take it to court.

You should have brought this information to your supervisor's supervisor first, though.

Well, I first tried to talk about it with the person himself. But I was to "Shut up", so there went that idea

Ransac, you can get fired for stating an opinion, you just wont be "officially" fired for that.

If you can get fired at a job like that, what the NIB is freedom of speech good for. If making a comment at work regarding the gross misbehavior of a supervisor is punishable by starting the path of termination(lots of big words, brain hurts), I feel that violates your rights.

The Freedom of speech only extends to the government, the government is unable (in most cases) to punish you for what you say. An employer on the other hand can fire you since they are paying you. You are basically a product, they are paying for you services. They can also hide by saying that you are commiting liable.
Of course, they can get some gruff for firing someone under such circumstances, especially if they are government funded institutions, such as schools. Also there is going to be bad PR if they do fire someone in this way. Usually they would want to avoid any such legal battle or bad press so they would most likely resolve any real problems with as little conflict as possible.

I resigned my position at a top engineering college(RPI) for simular reasons two months ago. I was no longer able to stomach being in a position where I conveyed what I was told was the truth only to find out again and again (this went on thru several management changes over three years) that I was giving false hope and telling lies.These people were not just my employees,they were my friends.

Stand up for what you belive in,even if it means you stand alone.

I ended up quitting a job after doing something like that too, after the work environment quickly became hostile. And I am SO glad I did. Those shills know what pieces of <you can't say that here!> they are, and they know I was right to do what I did, and they can kiss my <can't say it!>.

But anyway. Always do what you think is right, or you will become one of THEM.
