you know the drill. these are for fun, and to give you a place to wow other magic players with your otherwise absolutely useless knowledge. much like when, for whatever reason, you're maindecking light of day, and you just happen to be playing against a hatred deck.

1) we all know that necroptence was the original yawgmoth's bargain. but what was the original (and far inverior) version of necropotence?

2) conversely, what vastly improved card did island sanctuary become?

3) name each of the cards that were available by mail when you sent WotC the reciept from one of their magic novels.

4) name every card that requires at least one mana of each color to cast.

5) what was the first card to ever require an errata?

6) similarly, what was the first non-ante-related card to be banned from tounrament play?

7) while wizards was smart enough to see how powerful cards like ancestral recall and time walk were and thus pulled them from all future sets, they've also made some boneheaded pulls. name at least three crads commonly regarded as either "total crap" or "absolutely useless" to be announced as oficially out-of-print sometime in between revised and fifth edition.

1. Greed

2. Moat

4. Sliver Queen, Coalition Victory, Last Stand, 1996 World Champion

5. Time Vault (it didn't use time counters so you could use something like twiddle to untap it and take an extra turn, but I have no idea if this was the first)

6. maybe Channel, cause of ChannelBall

no idea for 3 and 7

1) Liche

2) Moat

3) Arena, Sewers of Estark, Giant Badger, Windseeker Centaur, Mana Crypts (I think I've got all of the books, if you want me to find out which you get with each... Arena or Sewers came with Arena, and I think Mana Crypt came with Shattered Chains. Giant Badger and the Centaur I'm not sure which came with what, but they were from the middle two novels.[I got the novels on sale at about a buck each, two years too late for the cards to be gotten...])

4) 1996 World Champion(only one exists, and it's in some glass), Sliver Queen, Last Stand, Coalition Victory, and... Magic Guru(Enchant Player, given out by GURUs to people who wanted them and knew how to play/teach magic. B&W with altered back. Enchanted player has teaching and is a Magic GURU. You and enchanted player each add five Guru points to your Guru pool.(Gurus teach the Magic game and get free booster packs and/or unique basic land cards.)

5) Rookh Egg(had to be in play for you to get the rookh) Phil Foglio did a comic on this fact for the Duelist in one of it's earliest issues, check studiofoglio.com for the comic(for sale original art)

6) Chaos Orb

7) Oh Wow! How about Natural Selection, Illusionary Mask, Erosion, Simulacrum, Cyclopian Mummy, False Orders, Invisibility, hell, the list goes ON!!! Most of it isn't total crap, either. For the most part, if you want to have some fun, jack around with the jank. It's funny to see an invisible mahamoti djinn... :{ )

The only one I know that hasn't been answered is 5.

5: Rukh Egg was the first errata'd card due to the fact that players would play second and discard it during their 1st turn. By the text on it, it became a 4/4 flying creature. Officials realized this and decided to give it what was an "official rewording" or an errata as we know it.

okay, so far:

1: greed is the card i was thinking of.
lich, however, inspired another black card-drawing enchantment from ice age (oath of lim-dul)

2: moat is indeed the improved island sanctuary.

3: good job orgg, you got all five.

4: 1996 world champion, sliver queen, coalition victory, and last stand are all correct, but there's still one missing - surprisingly, it's from a very recent set, too.

5: rukh egg is indeed the right answer. time vault was among the first erratas, indeed because of twiddle (they proposed the "time counter" solution to counter that), but rukh egg was the first.

6: chaos orb is also the right answer. i guess the dci just figured that it caused waaaaaaaay more trouble than it was worth.

7: this one was for fun. and actually zadok, what inspired the question was me finding my 7 revised farmsteads while i was looking through my old cards and thinking "man, this card sucks. why the hell did they take this out of print?"

there are still at least a few more out there that haven't been said, though :)
