The challenge is as follows, build a deck around this combo:

Fishliver Oil
Merfolk Assassin

The more obscure the cards the better!

hey no offense man, but that combo pretty much stinks. i think so anyway. now i dont know how you would build a deck around it

Oversoul

The Tentacled One
I think that's the idea, Homestar...

The challenge is to build as good of a deck as you can using those cards and any other obscure cards you can fit into the deck...

Answering my own challenge, I added a third card to the set:

Fishliver Oil
Boomerang
Merfolk Assassin

See the boomerang would return the Fishliver Oil back to my hand and I could cast it again... (on an opponets creatures.) Now i need a way to get the boomerang out of the grave yard.

That doesn't work. If the creature doesn't have Islandwalk when the Merfolk Assassin's ability resolves, I'm pretty sure the ability is countered because it has an illegal target. I'm thinking the requisite combo here is Merfolk Assassin, Fishliver Oil, Skull of Orm. That's the simplest way to replicate the old Merfolk Assassin + War Barge combo. Let's see here...how to make this a board sweeper now.

You need five mana to activate the Skull of Orm and one mana to cast the Fishliver Oil. You can get that from two Gilded Lotus. You also need to be able to untap both of the Loti, the Skull, and the Assassin. So...

Fishliver Oil
Merfolk Assassin
Skull of Orm
2 Gilded Lotus
1 Imagecrafter
4 Aphetto Alchemist
Faces of the Past

You generate six blue mana with the Loti. Cast Fishliver Oil on the creature to be destroyed. Make that creature a Wizard with Imagecrafter. Untap the Loti with two of the Alchemists. Destroy the creature with Merfolk Assassin. Faces of the Past triggers, untapping the Alchemists and the Imagecrafter. Use the remaining five mana to activate Skull of Orm to retrieve Fishliver Oil. Untap Merfolk Assassin and Skull of Orm with two of the Alchemists. Repeat.

Way too many cards for what? He said to do something with Fishliver Oil and Merfolk Assassin. As it has been noted, this is a rotten combo. I decided to take some license with it and turn it into a board-sweeping combo, in the presence of a ridiculous amount of setup. It's just one of those "Things that one-eyed rich people do for fun." 4x Fishliver Oil
3x Intuition
4x Unnatural Selection
4x Counterspell
3x Boomerang
4x Merfolk Assassin
4x Lord of Atlantis
3x Merfolk Looter
4x Vodalian Illusionist
3x Rootwater Thief
3x Tidal Warrior
21x Island

It's a twist on a merfolk deck, and has redundant combos. Lord of Atlantis + Merfolk Assassin + Unnatural Selection does the same thing as Merfolk Assassin + Fishliver Oil. You can go full Fish with Tidal Warrior and Lord of Atlantis, and you've got Intuition to fish (heh) out your pieces. You even have quality utility merfolk in there, with Merfolk Looter to help find your combo pieces that much more quickly, Rootwater Thief to dismantle silly things like "strategies", and the Illusionist to help control your opponent's creatures.

Abuse THAT. :)

The combo is Merfolk Assassin + War Barge. It's a pretty weak combo compared to something like Royal Assassin + Icy Manipulator, which isn't tearing up Standard at the moment.

If you like weak combos, then go make yourself a deck. I personally like weak combos, but only weak combos with cards I own, and they usually do something more stupid or interesting than destroy target creature.
