How was your Prerelease?

I made a G/U deck (to be posted shortly in Decks), played in a 32 man tourney, and went 2-1 and drew my last match to get 3 boosters! Woo-hoo!

Also picked up some dwarfs from the Odyssey block that I didn't have...

We had a "Early Bird Flight" for players arriving before 8:15. Usually, we have around 200 players, so we figured that this would split them roughly in half, with 2 flights of 100 each.

We had 214 players show up before 8:15. We had another 94 arrive for the second flight around 10:00. We were VERY busy.

Why do you think you had an extra influx of people?

I didn't think Maryland gets that many but thinking back, we had my 32, three more going on before it, and then the 128 started. The room didn't feel like 200 people though...

Hard to say. Does anyone else have any input on whether or not this prerelease had a larger turnout than usual.

All else being equal, I would say that a lot of people like the idea of an all-creature set and want to try it out. However, all else is not equal. We were very clear on when we would be running flights, we provided additional incentive. We dispursed some of the prize support to people who dropped and played in additional flights. In the end, it didn't even really have a significant impact on the prize support we were able to offer anyway. In part because of the large turnout. Sort of a "if you build it, they will come" thing :D.

I had a great time at the Atlanta PR, my first since Apocalypse. No flights for me...just one draft, where I built the silliest draft deck ever. Don't quite know what came over me...but it was a ton of fun. Here's what I built:

6 Voidmage Apprentice
1 Willbender
5 Echo Tracer
3 Keeneye Aven
1 Mistform Seaswift
1 Riptide Director
3 Glintwing Invoker
1 Warped Researcher
2 Primoc Escapee
17 Island

Six morph counters and five morph unsummons made for three interesting games. And I actually won the first one. Too bad the deck wasn't...um...oh yeah, good.

Ran into Prince RXI and Zero T K, who had to leave pretty soon after I found 'em. Ended up getting some good trading in (not with them), and eventually played a bunch of games with the three fish decks I brought along.

All in all, a great day to be alive.

Mine didn't go so well. I went 0-2 drop in the sealed, though I did have a neat deck and my opponents were very cool. Then I went out for a bit for food and stuff and did one draft when I got back (all-Legions draft sucks) where my blue-black decks with flyers and unblockable guys and cycling zombies got rolled by a green-red beast of a beast deck.

I made up for it this weekend tho by dominating a 16-person draft tournament then the mini-prerelease the next day. I feel better now that I have a couple of boxes worth of Legions. :)

Chaos Turtle reminded me of a funny story during one of my matches... it was my second match and either the first or second game (I think the first). My opponent was very cool and laid-back. He was playing a blue/green deck also, I think... but we were both strapped for mana at the time, me with 3 or four lands and him at 3. I, of course, had a bunch of 5-7 cc green creatures in my hand and had out a Wall of Deceit and some flyer that was plinking him for one. He had out some non-essential guys. Well, I guess he was either bored or frustrated at the lack of land (I think bored) and he decided to cast that green enchant land that gives green mana for each elf in play on MY land! He said I was hoping I'd mana burn or something when I tapped it. I said dude, you just helped me out (not yet because there was just one elf in play at that time). When I got another elf a couple turns later, that started the beginning of emptying my hand and rolling over him. He just said "Ah, well."

Great guy... :)
