Hey all.

I was just wondering on everyones opinion of the future sets. Invasion mostly, but also 7th, planeshift, and anything else people have heard. Are they too powerful? too toned down? What?

Also

What is your opinion of the way the game is changing from a more tournement oriented game (US block) or a more "Here, I just bought a random deck, lets play" casul type of game (MM block and maybe invasion)

My thoughts.

I think magic is gonna rock now. I loved MM block (not MM though) and so far invasion looks excellent. I love the way the game is slowing down and I love the more player interaction. I am very happy.

What says the audience of the Casual Players Alliance?

I get huge surges of giddyosity just thinking about the new sets. 7th's gonna be black-bordered and therefore rock, invasion looks great from what ive seen on sideboard and mtgnews, and I love the slow environment.

I like the change in the game.

It looks like Invasion is actually going to be a little speedier than Masques, so the t2 scene is going to be reminiscent of the environment when Tempest was dominant, sans shadow.
That is, fast weenie decks and mid-tempo control, perhaps with some slower lockdown decks. Hopefully, we'll be getting an artifact reset button (Powder Keg should've been an Invasion card) to help keep the weenies in check, improving the viability of the slower decks in the face of the weenie rush.

As far as the casual scene goes, it looks like we're getting plenty of "fun" cards - some of which are actually pretty good - as well as decent multi-color lands in the uncommon slots... a huge improvement for the player who doesn't want to spend money getting the rare ones.

I don't really know enough about what's going to be in 7th, but if the trend continues then I expect that Magic will be as fun to play next year as it was two years ago.

I personally love the current changes happening to the game. I have a perspective leading up from the days when it was legal to play with 4 Black Vises and Strip Mines, and it seems to me that the Magic environment has gone into its ups and downs. Do any of you remember the Black Summer and Combo Winter? Then there were the twin horrors of Masticore and Morphling, two cards that deserved to be in the Alpha-Beta-Unlimited Editions of the game, that were instead placed into an environment that couldn't handle their power. And with that came the ultimate deck thanks to Tolarian Academy.

Then came Masques Block, with its drive towards slowing and balancing the game. While many players shook their heads at the lack of power, few people realize that this block was perhaps necessary to deflate the powerhouse nasty that was the Urza Block.

With Invasion, R&D aims to correct the errors of Masques Block, by returning the influence of multi-color into the game. Coupled with this was the "Magic Second Edition" rules of 6th ed. While I question some of the "inverse streamlining" they made (aka. 'destroyed and cannot be regenerated,' instead of 'bury'), I like the simplicity of the game now. It makes for less confusion.

While I hated the Artifact Block environment, I think I'm going to love Invasion. It reminds me of my favorite standalone: Tempest. Tempest was more than just a tournament-level set. It had so many element which made the game more dynamic and fun. Its block later had its share of blunders (ex. Hatred and Pandemonium), but overall, it was a lot of fun for the casual player. From all indications, Invasion (Siege Block) will be the same. I hope these changes last. It's not as fast as the primordial days of Moxen and Duals, and it doesn't seem to be as powerful as Urza's, but these changes are fine with me. ;)

I haven't really heard anything about other sets like 7th, Planeshift, etc. so I can't comment on those.

I like the way Magic has been drifting in general. It seems to me people like to bash Fallen Empires and Homelands just because there were no really 'stand-out' cards (yeah, yeah, I know Hymn and Autumn Willow and Aeolophile and blah, blah, blah) but except for Hymn which got the honor of being banned there were no 'must-have-for-every-deck' cards like Port and Masticore. That in my mind is a good thing and hopefully future sets will be more like them in that all cards are almost equal.

We haven't seen the sets! We've seen about 10-15 actual cards from Invasion. You can't pass judgement based on that. And we haven't seen anything on the next few sets, so how are we supposed to comment.

And Cerberus, they haven't made the sets more powerful. Look at MM Block compared to Urza's Block. MM is incredibly weak. Not that incredibly overpowered from Urza's was any better. In my opinion, both blocks have been pretty bad, and I now play much less than I did in Tempest block because of it.

I hope Invasion is better than the (imho) crummy blocks before it. But the thing is, you can't tell yet. So don't bother trying.

In regards to what Apollo said...I don't want to start anything here, but half the fun of having a new set come out is speculating about it, making educated guesses on it based on what you know.

Don't be a killjoy, man. We're having fun speculating and thinking about Invasion. So what if the rest of the set basically blows? We've got some good stuff coming here. And it's already shaping up to be a huge leap forward from the pile of cardboard that was Masques block (Prophecy notwithstanding.)

I think Invasion looks pretty freakin' neat. Tsabo's Web bothers me a little because I happen to like multi-functional lands and Rishadan Port has made no impact whatsoever around here (I still haven't ever played against one). But this set looks like it's gonna be really good. The only card I've seen so far that just hasn't done anything for me was Samite Archer. It's multi-purpose but it just feels...ludicrous. It's an oxymoron on legs.

HumanError: I didn't mean to be a spoilsport, but in my opinion, asking if Invasion is too powerful is a bit silly, much less asking if PlaneShift is too powerful. Speculating that "this will be a great set!" is OK, but asking if it is too powerful when you haven't seen it...

FoR: Prophecy is Okay, Nemesis didn't impress me much other than Blastoderm and Saproling Burst, and the Burst is on the edge of broken-ness (whoa, I feel like I'm on the Dojo!)
