Okay, this is about the 3rd time I’ve posted this deck. It started out as the ‘after-sideboarding’ deck for the old Counter-Trenches deck of several years ago. The actual trenches deck just crumbles in multiplayer, which is what I’m building this deck for. You’ll notice some ‘key’ spells are missing like Fire // Ice, Prophetic Bolt, and four copies of Fact or Fictions (I still needed 2 of them though).

I replaced Fire // Ice with Jilt. Jilt is an instant (1U) from Apocalypse that sends target creature back to owner’s hand and if you paid the kicker cost (1R) it deals 2 damage to target creature, a two-for-one kind of card. The reason I didn’t choose Echoing Truth is that I know the environment that I’ll be playing it in and most of the players won’t have focused decks with multiple copies of creatures.

Order // Chaos over Prophetic Bolt for the simple reason that O//C gives me options. The Order side (3W) is an Instant that Removes target attacking creature from the game which is a horrible casting cost but it’s an option for ‘spot removal’ nonetheless and Chaos (2R) is an Instant that says, Creatures can’t block this turn. This I like, I can use it on MY turn, of course, just in case I can’t punch through otherwise but I also have the option of screwing with an opponent if another opponent “Alpha Strikes’ in a suicide attempt or something, I just play Chaos before blockers are declared and Wha-Lah! I’m a bad person, but a HAPPY bad person. :D

The original deck wouldn’t have used Suffocating Blast which says, Counter target spell and Suffocating Blast deals 3 damage to target creature. But, in multiplayer this card is just plain good. Another 2-for-1 kind of card. I thought 2 copies were enough.

Arcane Denial is kind of a weird choice but the Absorbs I had in there were not making the ‘cut’ in my play-testing, just too slow and the pay off of 3 life gain didn’t make it worth it once Pulse of the Fields made the deck. I don’t care if my opponent draws two cards because most likely they’re not playing a focused deck (I know about assuming so don’t give me the lecture).

The two Routs are there just in case I start to get overwhelmed in the late game. With the option of playing it at ‘instant speed’ I figured that I could afford that (3WW and the additional of {2} for Instamt speed) later in the game. Wrath of God was not giving me the instant option and so OUT they went.

I’m still not sure about Disenchant, I had originally thought about Seal of Cleansing (drop and forget) but my whole notion of building a nearly permanent-less deck is getting in my way. By having a nearly permanent-less deck I am effectively putting ‘dead cards’ in my opponents hands or another way to think of it; they’ll use those cards on someone else.

I have yet to use this deck in the MML games because I’m afraid it’s too vulnerable and I really don’t want to “aggro” it up anymore. The Flametongue Kavu’s (FTK’s) are considered a one-shot card and if it blocks then hooray for me and if blocks and lives for another day that’s even better let alone actually attacking with it. With Jilts in the deck I could send it back to my hand after blockers are declared or after damage goes to the stack but before damage resolves and save FTK for another turn.

The card drawing may be uncalled for since we’re using the virtual “Serum Vision Effect” but I put them in just for more digging (and a little showing-off).

Anyway, there’s a new card shop that opened up near my work, in fact, right across the street from the H.S. and I’m heading up FNM there. Okay, it’s not an official FNM and I’ve asked the store owner not to use that term until he gets the rights to sponsor one, but meanwhile, I’m making up flyers and promoting Friday night magic events at his store. There are a lot of Magic players from my old HS magic club that have nowhere to play and word is spreading fast. This week is Multiplayer Magic using the MML rules and then every other week is Kamigawa Draft and in-between THOSE weeks will be formats like Peasant Magic, Five-Color, Multiplayer and common drafts. There’s a $2.00 entrance fee for all of the events except for the drafts which is a $13 cost to players. All the prizes are store credit and the booster drafts are 1st place 8 packs and 2nd place 4 packs (you KNOW winners will ID & split).

I probably shouldn’t actually participate in these games myself but I will until things get off the ground or if they have an unclaimed spot in a draft. This Friday is the first announced event so we’ll see how things go. I’m inviting my friends, too. I hope they show up.

I’ll let you all know how things turn out!

After writing the article on the front page I couldn't, for the life of me, come to grips with the demise of Miss America. I mean, I had worked so long on the deck while trying to get it to work for Large Multiplayer games.

But, as I was de-sleeveing it I got a tiny brainstorm; what about adding some massive burn to it?

I'll provide the list in my next post but I had put in 3 Pyroclasms and 4 Earthquakes. I also put in 4 copies of Wrath of God and replaced the FTKs with Bloodsometing or other, a red 2/2 creature that has: {R}, Sacrifice ~this~: ~This~ deals two damage to all creatures.

I'm renaming the deck "Star-Spangled Slaughter" another rip-off name, I know

In truth, I don't think I've ever seen a Bloodfire Kavu in play. I know that I never used it. I guess we always thought that it costed too much or something...

It sounds pretty good against elves. And in multiplayer, the versatility is probably well worth the mana cost. :)
