Have you ever sold out on Magic?

Yes, this thread is about selling out on Magic. I'm sure that most of the older players have considered this or have went through this time of their life when they have to choose between Magic and something else.

Some sold out because they are sick of the game. Some sold out to take up something else. eg. Pokemon, other hobbies. However, I dare say that majority came back to Magic. They regretted letting go their entire collection and starting from scratch again.

I have friends that sell out on Magic constantly, of course they never will make good players because of their attitude. My question is, what makes people want to quit Magic and after that come back?

And even though they lost their entire collection of cards, they still make the effort to play Magic again. Why? Anadotes and insights most welcomed!

Guilty as charged. At one point, my income simply wasn't comin' in. I took that as an omen, sold my cards, and got out of the game.

....for about six months. I missed the hell out of the game. It was and still is fun, even if all the local players play netdecks in casual games. I picked back up in...Ice Age, I think (it was a long time ago)...and never sold out again. I even set a goal for myself: I want one of every card ever made.

I'm not...that...far...off.
Missing most of an Alpha set.
Missing about 3/4 of a Beta set.
Missing about half of an Unlimited set.
Missing about half of an Arabian Nights set.
Missing one...ONE...Legends card. (Moat.)

That's it.

Ive done this twice, the first time i sold all my cards i really needed the money, i wish i had them all back now, :(
64 dual lands man i wish i had them back :(
The second time i was just stupid, NEVER AGAIN will i sell out :(

Two addendums:

1. Portal is not Magic. No artifacts, no instants...not Magic. Therefore, I don't collect it.
2. I don't collect foreign sets; I would go insane.

Haven't sold out, though my wife wishes I would. I've pretty much stopped playing though; the last time I bought cards was a box of Exodus. I did trade for some commons of US but that's about it. I don't know if I'll ever sell out though because of the possibility of playing again (even with older decks).

Nope, never sold out. My wife wants me too, but na-uh. No way, man!

Istanbul! That's me man! I keep one of every card from every set, including Portal. I just want to make sure I collect all the different artwork, which is the reason I got into the game in the first place. Also, it's nice to see my cards as a kind of encyclopedia. It's so much cooler to look at my cards than pictures in the books.

Though I am compromising now. I used to try and collect sets. I once sold a set of revised to purchase a couple boxes of another TCG. I have since come to the realization that I don't have the time or money to collect that way anymore. I had to sitdown and assess my feelings about the game. I enjoy the variety of the game but I thought I would limit my cards to 1 or 2 colors. In evaluating it really wasn't close. I could never handle the sacrifice of Black, didn't like the aggressiveness of Red. I liked the creatures of Green but most of the spells are not to my liking. So I am going to concentrate on Blue/White. Of course it had to be White I love Angels and Soldiers. Blue is a fondness for Merfolk and control. So all I am saying is I am divesting myself of Red/Black and Green cards but retaining BLue/White and Artifacts. Everyone needs to be able to live with their hobbies.

about every 6 months i get so sick of playing magic a just stop playing, although i know not to sell my cards. I dont play for about 3 months and then i have this feeling like i have to play. Maybe we should sue the WotC for making an adictive product and then they will pay us money to compinsate for the money we lose as a result of the adiction

This thread's a really good example of why you stuff your cards in your closet when you're sick of the game.

I started fading around Urza's Destiny, actively hated the game during Nemesis, and experienced a rekindling of interest when Prophecy came out. I don't have the money, but I have a lot of cards from friends deciding they didn't want to play anymore. =)

If you decide you're sick of Magic, don't sell your cards. Just stuff the box(es) in your closet. You might want them again someday, and if you're lucky like I was, the other players in your area will become interested again and realize that you don't NEED any of the cards you own. Casual environments rule.

I've sold all my cards twice and had the majority of them stolen once. Now that I work for StarCityCCG, it's a lot easier justifying staying in the game even when it seems like work, so I don't think I will make the same cost error again. I still sell cards, but now that I have a job, it comes out of an economic desire to turn some cards into more cards, rather than a desperate drive to turn all cards into rent money.
I think that most players who sell all there cards are students, and the ones who have the luxury of just throwing a few hundred to a few thousand dollars in there closets have full time jobs.

I newver totally sold all of my cards. Even in the stinking glut that was the 4th to 5th ed. transition (when I picked up L5R), I kept most of my cards. Even when I was actively playing L5R (I still am, actually), I kept a few decks on hand just in case I felt like playing a game.

However, I DO make it a habit to sell or trade away most of my white cards. Practically all of them. Even the rare ones like Army of Allah. I don't know why, but it's the color I never played. Ever. The closest I'd get to playing white is splashing in a few choice cards like Balance, Swords or Disenchant.
