Harry Potter movie

Saw this over the weekend and it was pretty good for an adaptation of the book. The major thing "missing" was the plot and character development; in the book, you had a sense of buildup of who was behind the evil doings and then the surprise ending. In the movie, it kind of skips all of that so it's not so much a surprise (like the Sixth Sense had the sense of surprise). But we went with someone who hadn't read the book and he said he got the plot and what the movie was trying to say so it must have been good in that regard.

*clapping*

I did feel the main plot of the movie left a bit to be desired, but as far as getting the _effect_ and feel of the books, it was fantastic. Some beautiful scenes and ideas (Fluffy is the most wonderful idea of all time) straight from the books, and the characters are convincing. How they managed to dig up no less than three _skilled_ young actors who don't have the initials H.J.O., I do not know. But I'm not gonna complain!

Absolutely wonderful flick. :) And the books are great too.

Actually, I thought the 2 books I forced myself to read were cheep and not-so-subtle rip-offs of hundreds of better works of fiction that had come before.

But, hey...that's just me.

Yeah, but you're how old? And the books are aimed at what age?

I think the books are better than a lot of fantasy out there, so where does that leave us?

Sadly, I've seen more adults with a Harry Potter book in hand then children.

As for what that leaves us, may I suggest...

Tolkien
Ursala K. LaGuin
Margret Weiss and Tracy Hickman
Ben Bova
Harry Harrison
(the above two are kinda science-fiction/fantasy...like starwars)
Marion Zimmer Bradley
Mervyn Peake (author of the wonderous Gormanghast books)

...I'm sure I could name more were I at home in the library.

As for the Harry Potter books being "children's", I must point out that Tolkiens works, especialy The Hobbit, are generaly considered to be children's books.

Weiss and Hickman? Only the Dragonlance can be considered exceptional. Darkstone (?) and the Djinn one was not all that great. And the space one.

Harry Harrison: I presume the Stainless Steel Rat? Good, but rather trite after you've read them. Sort of a "McGyver".

Zimmer Bradley is the only other author I've heard of and I haven't really read her.

Tolkien may NOW be considered children's, but I believe it first came out in a magazine for adults.

Well, with Weiss and Hickman I was actually thinking of The Death Gate Cycle, a 7 book series that I think is the best work of fantasy of the last 10 or 15 years.

I thought they were great, and I suggest you check them out if you have not already.

And if you have read them and did not like them...well...never mind then.

The Gormanghast books are also very, very good...very Tolkienish, but that may be because they were both British and both wrote around the same time.

I was sad that they didn't put in the part where Hermione ( spelling?) helped harry pass Snapes Stage before he got tothe mirror. I wanted to see that. They some more things out too but you can't blame Warner Bros. It was a good book and htey can't possibly put everything out. Oh yeah new record holder is the harry potter movie 93.5 million dollars in 3 days. Oh yeah if any1 is looking for laughs I just read and article in the LA times today about Harry Potter and if Quiddith was real. Its really funny.

Neo: While they certainly can't put EVERYTHING in, they sure tried! Coming in at 2:23 was rather annoying - It ran right through the start of the meteor shower! (Not that I was awake through the whole shower ANYWAYS, but whatever...)

I was a little upset they turned the chess scene into a montage, rather than a turn-by-turn thing - But then, that would have been dull, yes?

I'm going to see it this weekend. I haven't read the books, but my mom and brother have. If this movie is good, I suppose I'll have to read the books eventually.

I also thought they missed out on Hermione doing her thing in the puzzles but I think they combined it with the plants after dropping through the trapdoor. I guess doing the logic puzzle wasn't that exciting on the screen.
