Goodbye to Magic

It is time for me to say goodbye to Magic. It may not be permanent but it probably will be. I have enjoyed Magic. I can say I was there during the Golden Age. But I have several reasons for calling it quits.

1) Time. I am coming to a close on a 4 month remodeling effort. During this time, I took a temporary hiatus from playing Magic. I still traded online, followed the sites but it wasn't the same as playing. Now that I could probably make time to go play I find I am not driven to do so. There are other things I want to do. I have a couple of other projects, I want to go see Star Wars and Spiderman. Just a load of things I would rather do. Probably spurred on by reason 2

2)Enjoyment. There was a time that I would skip work to play. I really enjoyed the early Arena seasons they made Magic fun. Getting in Multiplayer games that lasted hours. I am a casual player at heart. I loved building weird themed decks and really enjoyed it when they worked. But the Magic phenomenon has left Toledo. We still have some people that play on a regular basis but it has gotten too competative. When you show up with your own creation, you are treated like a looney. Why would you ignore all that superb strategy to play with sub optimal cards?
A part of the reason I am looked on this way is reason 3

3)Age. Next year I will be Fifty. It seems as if the Magic community doesn't age. Although there are a few other old farts like me at the card shop we are getting as scarce as females. A lot of times I feel like I am in a foreign land. Though to be honest the people I really enjoy playing against are the youngest and newest players. They are exploring the game for the first time and really enjoying its diversity.

Now I want to close in saying this is a personal decision. I think that Magic is a wonderful game and I like the direction it seems to be heading. There were times when I worried about Magic having a future but it looks as healthy as it has ever been. It is just that at this time in my life the advantages of playing Magic don't outweigh the costs. I will probably become a lurker at this site as I have enjoyed it immensely. This site has probably delayed my decision by a year but I will put it off no longer. Good luck to everyone

Whatever you do, don't sell your cards. The money is already spent, so there's no point. Stick them in a shoe box and tuck them away somewhere. Do you have young childen or grandchildren? It may be fun to teach them years down the road.

It may also be nice, 20 years hence, to dig them out and look through them yourself.

Keep them...trust me.

I am going to keep my Angel collection, my foil deck and probably some other white cards. I intend on selling the other 10,000+ cards to Star City. They take up too much space and besides I want to get a new video card.

If I were you, I'd slap together a deck for each colour, something you can break out for a pick-up game with someone else everyonce in a while, or to teach someone. Then, dump the rest. You know, a creature deck for green, a burn deck for red, a counter deck for blue, a discard deck for black, and your angel deck for white. Maybe it's just me, but I'm a pack rat. I get rid of nothing. I've still got D&D character sheets from 15 years ago.

Ummm...got anything I might want to take off your hands?

OH, and lurker or not, be usre to see the RPG through!

Don't sell all your cards! At the very least put together the decks
suggested by Rando and a couple other MP decks.

I've know people who have sold their collecton only to regret it
later. You can use the monies from the cards you will not be
buying to get that new V-card.


Just my opinion......

Just want to reiterate what others have said; keep some cards for decks so you have a base if you ever want to get back in. And keep coming back and staying in touch!

Anything for sale from you... id be interested... i might pay higher than starcity... looking for old commons and uncommons

I stopped for many of the same reasons rkoelsch is. I can honestly say that if you don't think your going to play anymore then feel free to sell everything, but make sure your decision is the one you want. When I quit I sold everything but one card that has sentimental value and was able to get a new vid card, DVD drive, and a bunch of money in the pocket for other things. I haven't regretted it one bit. Sure, keeping a couple quick decks was a good idea, but for me kinda useless since no one else here played and I wasn't about to start intro'ing the game to anyone anymore. And storing them in a shoe box was also an interesting idea just to watch the values fly around. But speculation isn't a hobby of mine and I needed the cash much more then I needed the cards so I sold them. No regrets 6 months later.

Always the one to make things harder on myself than they need to be I made a decision. I am going to keep my angel collection and then I am thinking of keeping 4 of 9 different cards for each cc for white. Never really cared for the other colors. for example
cc1 4-Benevolent Bodyguard, 4-Soul Warden, 4-Devoted Caretaker, 4-Ramosian Sergeant, 4- Mystic Penitent, 4-Tundra Wolves, 4- Orim's Chant, 4-Sword to Plowshares, 4-Tithe.

You know I could get rid of the other 4 colors and just keep my white cards but I really have nothing in the others to sell. oh decisions, decisions.

You know at the rate I am going I will make excuses to keep all of my cards. This is getting very frustrating.

What cards in the other colors do you have that someone might even possibly be interested in? I'm sure there is someone who would buy them. Post some highlights. I know that for me at least, I'm always looking for something obscure to finish off a set.

Oh, and I still say just keep a couple of decks and dump the rest. You know, just enough to actually play a simple game with. If you never play with the other colours, then there's no reason to keep them at all. If the "deck of each colour" idea I posted above would result in your keeping too many cards, then just keep your angel deck, and throw together a black deck of untimate evil and keep it as well. Then dump the rest.

And I'm stilll interested in knowing what you have to offer by way of the other cards. You should geve your ol' buddies here first dibs. ;)

It gets really hard when no one will play with you. I just graduated from college and lots of friends I played with as a freshman (6 hours a day) sold their cards (to me :) ) and moving to a new town makes it difficult to find anything.

I found a place near here that plays tournaments, but the guys like to have fun with my 250 card B/G shared deck even more. Competitiveness can really kill the fun, but I'm glad there's some fun people around.

For gamers like me, you pretty much have to go with what your peer group is into. Super Smash Brothers Melee and collecting Ethereal Bone Snaps seems to be in right now.
