Gentrification of the Lotophagi [Pauper EDH]

Oversoul

The Tentacled One
The rarity downshift of Garth One-Eye gives me the perfect commander to run the Pauper EDH version of "Has-beens and Never-weres." Every card in this list except for the commander itself dates back to before Eighth Edition and the change to the Modern Magic card frame. And these cards are former tournament all-stars or were pet cards of mine back in the 1990's. Now they're all back, united in this goodstuff list that's partially maybe more of an OK-stuff list.

Finally got to play this deck last night for the first time. Struggled a bit because I couldn't find white mana for Garth and most of my other cards were seeing me get outclassed at the table. I held Undergrowth in reserve in case I really needed it while working to weaken Eric's position against the rest of the table, but his deck kept drawing enough cards that it was a constant threat. Scrivener rescued my Capsize, but Eric was able to lock down Garth with stun counters. I hit Eric with Kaervek's Torch, taking him down to 1 life, and the other two players scrambled to have better board states against me and against each other rather than working to finish him off. Ultimately, this bought me a bit of time to get value out of Garth, first with Regrowth, then with Shivan Dragon, which joined my Serra Angel as a flying blocker, but the Angel perished to direct damage soon afterward. After Casey finally finished Eric off, I was able to use Garth for Black Lotus in order to get enough Pestilence damage that only my Garth and my Shivan Dragon survived. This let me finish Casey off with Pestilence activations on my next turn, with an attack by Garth and Shivan Dragon getting Stefan to a low enough life total that Pestilence took him out too.

It wasn't the strongest deck at the table, but it had the tricks to win that game in the end.
