Forget Hondens!! Surprisingly Good Sanctuary Deck

Hello all.. with some people trying to make honden decks, I decided to tinker with them, had little success and moved on..
I found out a few things:

1) that sanctuaries from AP do more than honden's anyday..
2) with just 2 cards, one 2cc one 3cc you can exploit sanctuaries
3) You get a turn 2 drop, unlike honden decks.
4) All the creatures that benefit sanctuaries, have pro color.
5) With type of land and consistency, you dont need tribe elders, callers, joiners, pentads, or kodama's reach, and they hurt it.

Heres what ive come up with.. so grab all your ****ty AP cards and built a fun deck.

3 Shivan Zombie
3 Vodalian Zombie
3 Yavimaya Barbarian

Enchantments
3 Ana Sanctuary
3 Ceta Sanctuary
3 Dega Sanctuary

6 Plains
6 Swamp

Consistent, simple, fun, effective, pro color.
Life Gain, Life Loss (to opponent), damage to Creatures, card draw, +'s to creatures

It looks pretty cool, although I'm not sure if those creatures are all the best ones for it...

You're right. It worked pretty good but, i was going for an all or nothing approach.

For example.. Llanowar Knight is GW and triggers the necra for 3 life, but he only hits 3 sanctuaries..

Here are some things i found out.

-The Green sanctuary is unnceccesary, with one trigger it sucks, with 2 its amazing.
-Goblin Legionairre is by far the best creature triggering all but the green one (which needed to be cut)
-I also removed the Yavi barb because it isn't necessary to have the max for the card drawing sanc.
-I also found i could remove green entirely, add mainly blue, some white, some red..

there are now 10 sources of black mana, 12 blue, 12 white and 12 red.

The red and white sanct are the best, establishing control. 4 sanct to 3 of a creature that maxes its triggers.

I added in some hack cards for a couple reasons..

alter reality has synergy with the blue shrine. When you discard it, big whoop.

Also you can bend a sanct to say..
When you control a green and a green permanent :D.

Also with more sanctuaries you can stack them easier.

Heres the new deck.. i've played 8 games with it and mana/outcome seems to be optimal at this point.

Fetchlands can be good but you can't predict the future, and if you choose wrong it could have made a difference between gaining 12 life and 2.

Best part is after you have control, you can use your hacks to give a creature you have pro: color of your choice, and then chip away at them.

I have an Invasion theme deck that looks like

2 of each INV Bear
2 of each AP Bear
1 of each Split card
1 of each Sanctuary
1 of each Cameo
20 horrible CitP tapped INV lands

I just played it today to teach my roommate how to play Magic, and he beat me with the Monkey deck! :D

I was thinking the only way a monkey deck would work, and be fun... is to use summoner's egg with uktabi orangutan to get out one of the huge 7/7 or bigger gorillas... that or maindeck urza's incubator naming ape...

Possibly using typical creature into play cards like natural order, pattern of rebirth and defense of the heart... but i really want to avoid that..

4x Noble Benefactor
4x Draco
4x Monkey Cage
4x Show and Tell...

I need to run a tempting worm eater of days deck that isnt trash...

Why not both Hondens and Sanctuaries? That's the idea I first had. Maybe some Volvers as well?

cause a single sanctuary is better than a single and sometimes even multiple hondens.. plus theyre awful.

volvers might be good if you use the ones that can fly or gain life..

It's just that so much of the deck requires adequate lands and enchantments.

Too bad the Hondens are legendary. If you replenish and get several of the same Honden in play you lose them all.

Replenish is very nasty, but not perhaps with the Hondens.



Funny fact: 'dog' in Dutch is 'hond', dogs = honden. Kinda makes the whole 'Japanese style' of the shrines go awry :rolleyes:

Bark bark! er...

I like the sanctuaries, but trying to put them all in one deck is just .. well.. silly. Besides, i'd never play with the red one (coz the damage is mandatory, so you'll have to shoot your own creatures too) but have a deck based on the Dega Sanctuary which works rather well.

By the by, best card to go with Monkey Cage, is Planar Guide. (In Multiplayer anyway, but where else are you going to use a monkey cage?)

running all is a bad idea, thats why i dropped the green entirely and why the blue one only needs and meets 1 trigger.

the red and white are the main piece of the deck. The blue is for drawing and the black is alternate life loss.

With an excess amount of land and continual effects you dont have to pay for, it works out pretty nicely. Cards with a single cost and continous abilities are almost never bad... I mean... they're godly in draft... and have potential in constructed.
