Inside this thread I'll post "chapter" drafts of a new fiction story I'm writing. Got the idea while working and didn't want to let this idea slip. So, I'm once again posting stuff here in the forums to see if it can help keep the momentum going.
Working title is "Lawless Streets" but that rings too much like the name of a certain Australian celebrity who sung the USA anthem with a crazier-than-Janet-Jackson surprise.
Name will likely change.
INSPIRATION
What inspired the story is a varied assortment of things.
-On the radio last night, the show host Bernie Ward was talking about his daughter having to do a report on Lord of the Flies. He discussed how it is a possible aspect of humanity, that they turn sadistic and possibly even evil if left to their own devices. Only society at large keeps them in check. An interesting theory that leds to some good discussions with his callers. For the most part, while people had a problem with saying "people are innately evil" they did come to agree with Ward that people do evil things when there is no authority to keep them in line. The prisoner abuse in Iraq, war tragedies, and gang violence were constant argument points that led discussions heavily in favor of Ward's point.
-Today, while delivering a pizza, a young boy (maybe 13 at the very oldest) suddenly looked past me and made a comment to the nature of "oh no, why are they here now?" He was ashamed that a few girls were walking down the street to his house. Apparently, he was throwing a party, perhaps to impress the girls, and was dissapointed they saw him with the pizza guy at the door. I started to wonder, what if "they" were something else? What if "they" were not young girls, but something of danger? What would it be?
-One of the latest movies I saw was Collateral with Tom Cruise and Jamie Fox. An awesome movie, not just action-wise, but character- and dialogue-wise as well. Some nice development and interesting twists. It involves a cab driver who is forced to drive a hitman around Los Angeles while he kills people. The driver wants nothing to do with it, but threatened with death to him and people around him, he reluctantly assists the hitman.
SYNOPSIS
Lawless Streets is about a pizza delivery driver who witnesses the execution of a gang member. Not wanting to join the corpse, he volunteers to replace their driver, who was also killed in the fray. At first just a delay mechanism to find some way out, the driver finds himself more involved in the affairs of his captors as incidents arise that not only threaten the gang members, but allow the driver to further delay his execution.
I'll try to post the first chapter later today. I'm really eager to finish this thing up. If this thread dies out on my part before the story is finished, I hope somebody here can wake me up about it. "Hey Sefro, finish Lawless Roads already!" or something like that. Only way to keep the momentum.
