Fattie or Mind Twist?

This might have gotten lost in the "Insane mana in Extended" thread, and plus it's off-topic to that thread anyway, so I'm making a new thread for it.

My question is:

Going to Type 1 or 1.5 where these cards ARE legal, barring Force of Will (which is "just" one color), if you had 7 mana on your first turn going first, would it be preferable to get out a fattie where it might be taken care of with creature removal (more accessible in most colors) or Mind Twist your opponent's hand?

Mind Twist, without a doubt. Worry about killing them later. Getting 6 for 1 card advantage will often result in a scooping opponent anyhoo, so it can even be a _faster_ kill than dropping a Verdant Force on their heads.

To be honest, though, it might be just as powerful to play Morphling with 2 mana open to protect it...

Ideally, I would rather use that seven mana to play Morphling, Time Walk... but I digress. I would take the Mind Twist. Stripping your opponents hand is ultimately important when you may never get a chance to take a turn afterwards.

Considering that you spent probably 4 cards of your own to get that mana, plus one for Mind Twist, you aren't at the best advantage...

Ideally, I'd play Balance, and Morphling.

Twist all the way.
I've done plays where I twisted my opponent for 7 on my first turn then double racked him. Needless to say it was a once in a life time play followed by a grumbling scoop. :D

I'll definately nuke the opponent's hand. Disrupting his/her first turn plans will be a great edge for you.

I've done a first turn, Persecute and it is almost as good as a first turn 7 point Mindtwist. If this was done to you, you'll know how powerful it is.

I'd definately go with a nice fattie.
If I took out let's say 6 cards from a 7 card hand, I'd better either have a lot of creatures, and hope he doesn't bring a fattie out.
Also, a discard is only good if the opponent has something TO discard.
A fattie is useful all the time.

7 mana?
Hmm...
Mind Twist for 3, play a Negator.
With a 3 pt Twist I should be able to take either all their mana or all their spells. Either way they`ve only got four turns left to stop that Negator.

Actually, with 7 turn-one mana you could probably run some sort of combo and kill your opponent (ah, yes - that`s it - Necro/Lands Edge). You`ve even got a mana spare!

Multani: I'm slightly confused; if you bring out a fattie, on your opponent's turn he could also bring out a fattie or have some sort of removal (Swords, Balance, Diabolic Edict, etc) that can take care of your fattie. Why would you not want to just destroy his hand (it might not have been clear but you are the one going first so he has something to discard :))

Zadok: I forgot (and tried to imply) that you probably did use most of your hand to get that 7 or 8 mana (since it was coming off of the "Insane Mana in Extended" thread). So it's not really a 6 for 1 card advantage.

Gizmo: So you're straddling the fence and doing both :). I know there's probably other combo/first turn wins out there, I just wanted to see what people would think in terms of just a fattie versus Mind Twist.

I can only think of reason I would choose a fattie.

Lotus, Mox Sapphire, Mox Ruby, Mox Jet, Dark Ritual, Morphling, Island.

Play all Moxes, tap Mox Jet, play Dark Ritual, sac Lotus for UUU, play Morphling with UUBBB, spend final U to make Morphling untargetable until end of turn. Play Island.

That would be a turn-1 Morphling with 4 permanent mana sources on the board, and untargetability during both your turn and your opponent's turn.

Probability indicates that Twisting is better. In most situations, you'd obliterate your opponent's hand. There are a few rare instances where playing some creature like Morphling would be better, but otherwise, the Twist is the way to go.

The card was banned for a reason. ;)

Only now it's unbanned and restricted... I was just curious, I would think Twisting would be the better thing to do too.

All of this just makes me think that they should put Psychic Purge (or was it psionic purge?) back into the mix. :) I miss that card.

I'd play the fattie, but the better thing to do would be to play Mind Twist.

-Erin, the scrubbish one :)
