Dwarf Week!!!

I can't believe it, it's Dwarf Week at WOTC! I'm so giddy :)

Here's Mark Rosewater's Article about them.

Funny things:

The Mohawk is a viable dwarf haircut.
Well, actually, Warhammer made it the viable haircut first...

(Paraphasing) Geof Darrow's art was responsible for changing Dwarf Scouts into Goblin Scouts in Mirage
So now I have someone to blame for preventing dwarf tokens to be made way early in the game :)

Joklur the Dwarf Union rep needs to have the job for life (forgot to paste his views)

This doesn't mean you'll never see a dwarf again (because you will) but be aware that when you do, enjoy them as they are never going to be as plentiful as the goblins.
Sad truth, but it gives me hope.

"Did you know that the game of Magic has over three hundred legends? Three hundred! You know how many goblin legends there are? Six. Elf legends? Four. Snake people legends? Seven. Seven! Golem legends? Two. Cephalid legends? Freakin' humanoid squids. Two. You know how many dwarf legends there are? One. And he didn't even hang out with the dwarves. No, the one dwarf they promote to legendary status wouldn't even give his own people two words. And even him they had to kill after one expansion. 'Cause The Man can't be havin' no dwarves in his game. At least no high profile ones anyway. And don't give me no mouth about dwarves having two legends. Balthor alive, Balthor dead doesn't count as two. Barely counts as one."
Again, sad truth but funny :)

It would've been nice if instead of doing a goofball column, Rosewater had actually talked a bit on design of "uncommon" races in Magic, with a focus on Dwarves. With such a short week to talk about dwarves, I was disappointed to see one of the three theme articles wasted on Daisyliquid's random "humor."

I disagree. This is Dwarf Week, he should be talking about dwarves (and the article was a hoot). If you want to learn more about designing "uncommon races", wait for an week where there's no theme and he can talk about whatever he wants :)

There's two non-dwarf dwarf legends in Homelands. Raveenka(sp?), Wizard Savant, and Irini Sengir. Check their flavor texts.

Also, on the votes, please vote for the "Skeletons" choice that references Terry Pratchett. Any Pratchett reference should be rewarded!

Spidey??? I said uncommon races with a focus on dwarves. Dwarves are one of the neglected uncommon races in the game. It would've been nice to have some insight as to how they choose which races get pushed back, if there are design limitations or freebies they can do, and whatnot. There's actually a lot of design information he could've shared.

Instead, we get...well, you can call it a hoot. I'll just take it that's your way of making a euphamism for the word fart. ;)

Dude, if it's dwarf week, why would I (or the writer) want it to be expanded to ALL uncommon races? Like I said, it's not "Uncommon Race Design Week", it's "Dwarf Week". Not "Uncommon Race Week, Focusing on Dwarfs But May Include Barbarians, Viashino, Vampire, Cephalid, Etc".

He already said why dwarves get pushed back: they're just not popular (read Joklur's Union Statement part). I can understand that; gobbos are the favorite with the masses. But if I want a full-blown article on how they decide which uncommon race to push forward and put in expansions, then I'll wait for that particular design week. Not this one.

Sorry, I just feel very strongly about this. :) And no, that may be YOUR euphemism for fart, but I got plenty of sincere, hearty laughs out of it.

I'm surprised they didn't mention what the D&D movie dwarf said...

"She's too skinny lad! What you need is a good dwarven woman... with a beard you CAN HANG ON TOO! AHAHAH! "

Not impressed with Anthony Alongi's article yesterday - who cares about short formats? That to me is for "Format Week"...

Links for today:

Matt Cavotta's Column

Interesting, but some things are just basic dwarvish characteristics and by now, stereotypical. Maybe if he didn't cumulate all of his changes together...

Dwarves in Battle

Good to know for a dwarf deck :)

'twas a short, but entertaining week.

Insert another plug to vote for the 'Terry Pratchett Reference' on MaRo's poll. That way we can have three-in-one for subject material!

Now, if they bring back Orcs, that might get me to buy Magic again. ;-)

I miss Dwarves. When I was playing a league w/ some friends this year we had a lot of Fallen Empires and Homelands (it's amazing how cheap those cards are after all these years) and I found that a good Dwarf Deck can be pretty tough to beat if you get enough of them. Back then they had some real synergy going on. The only problem was that everyone saw the easier (and more populous) race of critters to choose: Goblins. Gobbo decks practically built themselves so people thought "Why bother w/ Dwarves?"

Well, if you take a good look at the cards so do Dwarf Decks! Just throw a bunch of Soldiers and Liutenants from Fallen Empires, add some Hearth Wolves and even Dwarven Ponies and it's a pretty fast deck. Later sets (Mirage, Visions, etc) had even more Dwarves w/ some pretty nifty abilities.

But, alas, it looks like Wizards gave up on the our dimunitive friends and left us w/ stupid cards like Barbarians, Ogres, more overpriced Dragons, and heaven knows what came out of the Kamigawa Block (begging forgiveness, but the PX's in Iraq didn't carry them no matter how much I begged!)

Ah well, perhaps we'll see some in Coldsnap or something...

"Dwarven Demolition Team: Cool card w/ an even cooler acronym!"

Not part of Dwarf week but Matt Cavotta mentioned them in his article today:

Myth #4.
Matt Hates Dwarves and is Keeping Them Down
Doubly untrue! While I did spit some acid at the little buggers in “Metadwarfosis,†it was really just to sell the gag. Dwarves are tough, so I knew they could take a little ribbing and still stand…er, tall. I thought it would be an interesting and thought-provoking exercise to try and use color pie philosophizing to work a Brundle-esque transformation on dwarves. I think my loaded Inbox proves that “Metadwarfosis†was rousingly thought-provoking. Also, you greatly overestimate my power to keep dwarves off the cardboard. My job is not to decide if they see print, it is to give them names and flavor and, in some cases, a face (see Bash to Bits illustration above.)

Sure, there are some things about the dwarf mythology that I don't like, but it does not make me want to pitch dwarves to the trash-pile. It just makes me want to shift the focus. It is my opinion that many fantasy fans seem to focus on the aspects of dwarfdom that I find least interesting. Take beards for example; beards can be cool if dealt with as a characteristic of dwarven culture; length denotes rank, painted or dyed during wartime, braided or dreadlocked to denote tribal membership. This is all cool stuff. What really stinks up the place is when the dwarf goes all Fonzie about his beard, coddling it and demanding that nobody messes with it. That is comic relief cornball stuff and we get enough of that with the goblins. Then there's the drunken tavern dwarf. This is one of those things that, in specific cases, could be seen as an interesting characteristic. But, spread across an entire race it seems to me a heavy-handed stretch. Binging and feasting after a victorious battle is cool. Waddling around drunk all the time seems more like a recipe for extinction.

Me, hate the dwarves? For goodness sake I built them a Shrine!
My seemingly biased take on the dwarves was just to sell the metamorphosis. Look at those dorky drawings- not exactly the most serious play for widespread buy-in. As I scribbled them out, I could not keep from thinking they looked like Frankenstein's monster.

The inactive radio buttons were an editorial oversight, not a sneaky way to avoid hearing how you feel about the absence of dwarves. (Our apologies. The buttons have been active since last Thursday.) This whole gag was made to stir the pot SO I could hear how you feel.

In the name of all that is short and husky, I encourage you all to take a second look at Metadwarfosis and submit your opinions. While I do not have the power to bring back dwarves on my own, significant consensus from the fan base can go a long way in kindling conversation within the Creative Team.
