Diabolic Edict, or lack thereof.

When looking over the 7th edition spoiler, I never spotted Diabolic Edict. However, many people refer to it being in there. Am I wrong? Are they?

No, Edict is not in 7th. I wish it were, but oh well.

In case you're wondering what happened, Edict's in Odyssey, not 7th.

Yeah, pity too. It'd be just the thing to handle that dratted derm.

Man, that is it.

7th edition isn't just dumb, it's insulting to Black players.

No Dark Ritual?
No Sengir Vampire?
No Diabolic Edict?
No Perish?
No Vampiric Tutor?
No Pestilence?

What am I supposed to get excited about? Giant Cockroach?

The best pick-ups are Megrim and Duress, which are components of, you guessed it, a BLUE/black deck. Why not? Blue/Black spells such as Undermine, Cavern Harpy, Recoil, etc. are better than anything mono-Black anyway.

If there's a WotC lurker out there, could they please respond to this and tell me and other dedicated Black players why we should buy 7th Edition?

There is no reason to buy 7th edition, black player or not.

Save your money for Apocalypse... I think you'll like some of the black stuff coming out way. Supress alone, gives me the willies.

(FYI - Supress: 2B; Sorcery; Target player removes his or hand from the game face down. At the end of that player's next turn, return all cards removed from the game...)

The only reasons you'd want to buy a basic edition is to get cards you don't have, or cards with new art.

Use the expansions to make new decks.

Speaking of which, any decks coming out with Serra Angel in them?

It's the same like Verdant Force... a lot of people were talking how great to use again Verdant Force... my friend was even buying boosters to find him... The told me to shut up (I told them it wasn't in 7th)...

Diabolic Edict in Odyessy ?

Dunno what will Odyessy look like?

I was excited about Giant Cockroach!!!

Seriously, 7th is an INSULT to users of black (I.E., me). Never again will I buy a pack.

Hey, at least there is one thing for black players to get excited about. No Armageddon, No Light of Day :)

Sengir Vampire was always pretty lame. Phrexian Plaguelord is so much better.

The loss of Diabolic Edict is immaterial. I never expected it to come back.

Dark Ritual was broken, BUT they've always made black need the Ritual; without it Black is a different color.

Vampiric Tutor was great. But you've still got Diabolic Intent, and Desperate Research, or even Rhystic Tutor.

No Pestilence? Who needs Pestilence, when you've got Thrashing Wumpus?

There are some great black cards they reintroduced, though.

Persecute, Stronghold Assassin, Ostracize, Fallen Angel, and Duress are all great cards.

Necrologia is a decent card to give to black. With Necropotence, and Bargain gone, this may come into it's own.

Crypt Rats is interesting.

Anyway, the real Tragedy of 7th was in the Artifacts they reprinted...

Iron Star, Ivory Cup, etc.
wait...it's easier to count the worthy artifacts

Teferi's Puzzle Box
Storm Cauldron
Static Orb
Spellbook
The Diamonds
Pit Trap (being generous)
Meekstone
Millstone (being generous)
Howling Mine
Grafted Skullcap
Ensnaring Bridge
Disrupting Scepter
Coat of Arms
Caltrops

Only 18 out of 39 artifacts that don't UTTERLY suck.
Sorry Aladdin's Ring, you kinda SUCK.

I know this may be off topic, but why is Supress so good? I mean compare it to cards like Parallax Nexus, what's so amazing about Supress? At least Parallax Nexus is adjustable...[Nothin' towards you Chaos Turtle, I just wanna see if there's info about Supress that I dunno...:)]

Once the game has gone on for a couple of turns, they're about the same, and the 'Lax Nexus is actually better once hand sizes get below 5.

But.

As a first-turn play (with Dark Ritual) Supress would give an amazing tempo advantage to black by denying the opponent his first land drop (assuming the black player went first). Effectively, this amounts to a Time Walk. Even going second, this is likely to remove 7 cards for a turn, and at least 6 (unless the opponent is also using accelerated mana to play multiple cards on turn 1).*

Granted, it gets worse as time goes on, but then black decks normally do (Necro-decks excluded...which is the reason why Necro was such a powerhouse in black weenie decks). That first free turn, while not actually allowing the black player to play any extra cards, puts her a turn ahead (if a card short) which can make all the difference in the world to a deck that wants to pound you senseless before you can mount an effective defense.

If I may broaden the topic a bit to cover my entire sentence... the other black stuff I had in mind included the mini-necro creatures that take life and give you cards when they come into play. Between Supress and self-replicating weenies, suicide black may be on the horizon once more, particularly considering rumors that Diabolic Edict -- conspicuously absent from 7th -- is in Odyssey.

(Note how I cleverly brought us back to the original topic.:))

DÛke, please never think that I would take anything personally, unless it's clearly meant to be so. ;)

*(Yes, I realize that using that same Ritual to play two good creatures could be just as effective, but how many good creatures are we seeing in monoblack lately for less than 3 mana? And this doesn't address the issue of the missed land drop, which could be devastating, especially to the player who foolishly keeps a sup-par opening hand, or who is playing with comes-into-play-tapped lands.)

Spidey - Nate Heiss beat you to it. Mafia King went 6-3 in regionals (Nate says it shoudl have beem 8-1 but he is bad) and killed with either 1 Ring, 1 Nether, or 1 Elfhame Sanctuary.

Is there a decklist? The only place I can think of off the top of my head would be maybe at Sideboard?
