Desolation Angel: Broken?

When the Apoc spoiler came out, I glanced briefly at this card, deemed it unplayeable, and moved on to the other "can't miss" cards, like Spirit Monger, Pernicious Deed, Vindicate, etc.

Time passed. I began to acculmulate these "useless" cards through trading and having them passed to me in drafts, often several cards into the pack. One day, I had 4 of these things, so I tried putting them in an B/W experimental deck, but they just seemed to pile up in my hand, because I needed the land to cast mana-hungry spells like Death Grasp. I took them out.

Then came IBC. Looking at the number and quality of counterspells available, my first attempt at a serious IBC deck was Go-Mar. In case I didn't draw Dromar, I put in a couple of Angels for random fat. A curious thing happened. instead of playing Dromar, and seeing it bounced or terminated, I would often wait until I could cast the Angel with kicker, along with counterspell backup (sure, this is 10 mana, but in an environment as slow as IBC, this is viable). I won 100% of the games where I could pull this off.

Eventually the Dromars came out, and the Angels went up to 4, along with lots of countspells and Routs that would hold off my opponent long enough to get my combo together. This deck is just brutal, and I still have yet to lose after kicking an Angel onto an empty table. Which leads me to my original question - is Desolation Angel broken enough to justify banning (at least in IBC) or watching?

This may seem like a ridiculous question, but consider:

In it's prime, Ernham/Geddon decks were very good - drop a fatty, blow away the land, win the game, 1-2-3. This required 8 mana, 2 cards, and generally 2 turns to setup. The D Angel is essentially 2 cards in one - a huge flying fatty and Armageddon. Yes, it costs 7 mana, but Standard provides "sac" lands and Dark Rituals, while IBC is slow enough to allow 7 mana spells to be played routinely. In the IBC environment, it takes 2-3 lands to be able to deal with the Angel. In the meantime, you'll probably get smacked a couple of times. Combine this with getting a couple of spells Undermined, damage from pain lands, and maybe a hit from a Death Grasp, and that's game!

So what do you think?

I think that Desolation Angel is a very good card, but doesn't reach the point of broken in any format. It's an innovative and interesting card designed to sort of make up for Armageddon's absense and create a whole bunch of new deck types.

You have to be kidding.

You find a use for Desolation Angel and you think it should be banned? Banning is meant for things that win turn 2 and disgust everyone...even some of the people who play the tobebanned card.

This is a GOOD thing. It means that the environment is open for exploration. It means that there is a chance for creativity. It means Magic is FUN again.

Besides...my B/W deck built around Samite Elder would laugh out loud as she escorts an army through your backyard for a big kegg—er...victory party. :D

Is Angel good ? Yes, amazing. But is it broken enough to be banned? Absolutely not! Compare it to Rishadan Port and Lin Sivvin in MBC.

Banning Desolation Angel would be simply insane. Is it undercosted? Probably. So is Spiritmonger. So is Pernicious Deed. Do any of the three deserve banning? Hell no.

Like Istanbul said, those cards are ALL undercosted and give the set it's power!!!

The Angel is not broken although it is worth playing. I use 2 in my deck. Try making a 3 color deck B/W/G, use the green for speed of Birds and elves as well as the destructive power of Deed. Here is a sample off the top of my head:

4 X Desolation Angel
4 X Spiritmonger
4 X BoP
4 X Llanowar Elves

4 X Armadillo Cloak
4 X Perniceous Deed
4 X Vindicate
4 X Death Grasp
4 X Dark Ritual

4 X Llanowar Wastes
4 X Brushland
4 X Caves of Koilos
3 X Swamp
3 X Forest
2 X Plains

Broken?
No.

Really good when there is nothing in play but land and your opponent is tapped out?
Yes.

Good the rest of the time?
Not so hot.

I can definitely see a few copies in B/W control, though. Keep your opponent's side of the board as clear as possible, kick the Angel through, and clean house.

Pretty much the initial criteria of a card to be broken is it offers a turn 1 or turn 2 consistently and it goes in the vast majority of decks so you're either playing it or against it.

If it meets one of those two, then it bears more scrutiny.

Thanks for the replies! Let me respond.

After playing in an IBC tournament this weekend, I would say the answer is yes and no. EVERY game I got off Angel w/kicker, I won.

The problem came in playing decks with lots of control, and there were lots of decks with lots of control. These matches became stare downs, with both players holding multiple counterspells, daring the other to attempt casting ANYTHING. Most matches ended that way. In 6 rounds, I went 1-2-3. At one point, I said we should start calling the B/W/U deck Draw-Mar, since it seems to happen so often.

The top 8 was dominated by Blue, in every combination except U/G.

So, the Angel might not be broken, but it is very good, when you can get it into play.
