Depressing realization

What's up with life in capitalist society? I mean, we spend about a third of our lives being educated (and many of the things they teach are irrelevant), the second third we spend searching for and getting a decent job, and in the last third we just sit around and act old, waiting for death.

So you get a good education just so you can get a good job, then you get a good job and you don't have any time to have fun, then you retire and die.

What's the point?

That's why you try and get as rich as you can as fast as you can, more free time then.

I love my job, I am a high school band director :).
I always wanted to be a band director ever since the 7th grade.
Do I make loads of money being a public school teacher? No.
But I love my job, I wake up every work day and go and do the thing I have fun at; teaching music.

<Now, if only I could get a job at Wiz Co. playtesting all of the blue cards..........>

...is this all about!?

For the start, I agree with you. Most education is irrelevant, I think. The most useful education comes for an individual's life experiences and survival, not any book. However, some of the knowledge obtained via school is important...

...the second third we spend searching for and getting a decent job...
Now this is where the bulls**t starts. If you spent the first 1/3 of your life getting decent education, you shouldn't spend that long getting a decent job...
Monkey:

...and in the last third we just sit around and act old, waiting for death.
This, actually, is the reason why I replied to this thread. "Sit around and act old" is the mindset of many people. You don't have to just sit around, nor do you have to act old. Your statement itself is clearly flawed, hence you say "acting," as if in a masquerade of some sort: why not be yourself? You wouldn't *have* to "act old," now would you? Besides, I happen to know many "old" people that have hobbies, and enjoy life. I know you may have heard this before, but age really is just a number, and death, to those who enjoyed life and fulfilled their every desire, should be nothing but yet another enigmatic journey...

Get a hobby man. Enjoy something. Heck, you're visiting this Magic message board -- make Magic your hobby. There's always time for fun. How could you call a job "good," if you, in the same sentence, declare "you don't have any time to have fun" because of that job?

Where the heck does love belong in all of this anyway? You seem to forget that love is a great factor and a wonderful goal for living. I'm sorry if you don't think that way...

Life is only great when you're doing what you want to do; when you're free. It's up to you if you want time to be your god and control your will, and make you act as if you have aged, as if your life has ended. It's up to you to gain control, and be free, enjoy what you can, and dream. Just follow the path you want, at the end you'll see the result, and hopefully it will be a big reward.

Get a hobby, or a soul of desire...open your heart, and push the limits...

And last, *and* least...money *can* buy happiness by the way, but it's not the only way you can be happy...

Well, kind of agreeing with DUke but not all the way...

Education is slightly important in the view that it's supposed to prepare you for whatever you choose to do in life. Obviously no one (technically) has your future mapped out for you, so no one can say whether you'd need calculus or chemistry or whatever in the future.

Depending on what you want to get out of life, you can find a job you like or make a lot of money, or both (boiled down). Achieving it can take 1/3, less or the rest of your life.

And being old, I wouldn't want to sit around. Depending on "old" (which I guess is above 60 from your 1/3s), I'd hope to travel and still have a good time :)

I think he got fed up with having been taunted and flamed and generally made to look an idiot as soon as he got on the boards. So he left.

Sensible guy.

Here's what I think:

DUke- your statement is valid, I was just being slightly sarcastic to make everything seem worse. :D

Arhar- Yeah, some cheese would be good, but none of that cheddar or American, that stuff is septic...

Gizmo- No, I'm not sensible at all, and I don't mind a good public humiliation as long as the people don't actually know me.

Everyone else- Yeah, I guess getting a job that you like is nice, but they are a bit hard to find.

But most importantly...

STOP MAKING FUN OF ME!!! :p

Sorry, I hardly see any taunting and no flaming (you must have a looser definition). What I do see are rebuttals to a rather generalized and generally misinformed, if not wrong, statement.

If you post something, expect differing opinions along with agreeing ones. If you can't handle the differing ones that aren't outright flames or taunts, then don't post ("you" talking about people who post in general).
